About this audiobook

This is a gripping story based on the author’s personal experiences as a prisoner of the Japanese Army during World War II. In 1941, the Japanese Army aimed their victorious war machine at the Pacific Island of Corregidor. American defenders, relying only on limited supplies of food and ammunition, were unable to repel the invasion. The island fell and thousands of Americans were taken prisoner. Many died daily from mistreatment, disease, malnutrition or a combination of all three. This is the story of one young man who had the will to survive. For four long, arduous years he endured as a PRISONER OF HELL...

Great book, read a few prisoner of war books and this was a good one.Doesn't go overboard on the violence and cruelty but you get the drift.

The story itself is sort of "Bataan Death March Lite" in that the author actually was never in actual combat, was not on the famous Death March, and spent most of his time served in Japan. This is not to minimize his sufferings in any way, but unfortunately the writing does not help us understand his situation very much; the Japanese are alternately "Papa-san" and "little slanty-eyed midget bastards" and their characterisations rarely rise above this level—not that I blame the author in any way.

But there are far, far better descriptions of the horrors of the Japanese camps than this one, and it does not help at all that the reading of the book sounds like Barney Fife (the Andy Griffith Show) (the voice of most of the cast of Americans) meets James Earl Jones (the author).

The cartoonish delivery and the high-school level prose unfortunately combine to make this book one to miss if you are in search of a good description of prisoners of the Japanese in WWII.

For that I suggest the absolutely gripping "Prisoners of the Japanese" by Gavan Daws.

An exceptional book with a tragic, but heart warming story of comraderie, and SO well read. The narrator, Gene, helps make this book EVEN better. Love his voice, character and sense of timing. His other recordings of a Viet Vet, Don Bendells Audiobooks, are fantastic too
