- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Series Info/Source: This is the second book in the Warren the 13th series and I got a copy of this book to review from the publisher, Quirk Books.Story (4/5): Warren is earning a nice living with his walking hotel and enjoying himself immensely, then his house stumbles and he finds himself facing off against the witches of Malwoods. This is a simple story that is well done and entertaining. It’s got a gothic theme to it but isn’t ever really scary. Characters (4/5): I enjoy Warren and his hotel full of companions. The characters are a bit stereotypical but still well done; this is a book meant for a younger audience and you can tell because the characters aren’t all that complex. Still I enjoy them and think younger kids will find the cast of quirky characters highly entertaining.Setting (4/5): I continue to really enjoy the setting of this crazy walking hotel. There is some adventure added to the story as they journey through the Malwoods. The setting was well done and the wonderful illustrations really brought it alive.Writing Style/Illustration (5/5): The strong point of this series, and this book, continues to be the quality and design of the book itself. While the writing is easy to read, the illustrations are what really give the story its atmosphere and uniqueness. Both the writing and illustration are very high quality and well done and together they make for a unique book. Summary (4/5): Overall I think I enjoyed this book of the Warren the 13th series even more than the first. I like the crazy walking hotel and Warren and all of his friends. The story is pretty simple and definitely aimed at a younger audience, however the book itself is beautifully put together and I enjoyed reading it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5And thus continues what is possibly the slowest reading year I've experienced in a verrrrry long time. Since I really enjoyed the first book in the Warren the 13th series (and reviewed it a few weeks ago) I thought I'd be safe reading its sequel Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods by Tania del Rio & Will Staehle. I was totally right. (Thank goodness for middle grade fiction when you're in a bit of a reading slump, ya'll.) After the events of the previous book, the hotel has become wildly popular as the world's only traveling hotel. However, trouble is brewing right around the corner in the Malwoods where the Witch Queen Calvina has decreed that she must have the hotel and its occupant Beatrice (remember she vanquishes witches). While Warren and his friends are unaware of the trouble brewing in their mists, Warren has set out on his own quest to find something to repair the hotel's control panel and lands himself in one mischief after another. (Ever heard of a snake oil salesman? How about one that literally sells snake oils that he procures himself?) Unforeseen dangers, new allies, scarier enemies (in larger numbers), and the resilience of a hotel manager pack the pages of this fun little book. Once again, I need to note that this book has amazing illustrations that I'd be more than happy to frame and put on the walls of my apartment. This is a really great series to use as a bedtime readaloud with a slightly older child because reading aloud isn't something you should stop once your child can read to themselves. #librarianrant2k19 10/10 for this sequel and I'm excited to continue with the third book Warren the 13th and the 13-Year Curse which is due out on March 26th of this year.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods picks up where Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye left off. It was discovered at the end of the first story that the hotel could walk, so it became the world's first Traveling Hotel. In this story, the twelve year old orphan Warren the 13th is making a good living running the family hotel, that is until he gets taken in by a mimic. When the mimic traps him in a store and takes over the hotel, the trouble begins. I do not want to spoil the story except to day that once again the witches are involved. The queen, an especially powerful and evil witch, plans to steal the hotel for her own purposes. Warren is able to escape and now must cross the Malwoods, a dangerous forest full of sinister trees to save his hotel and rescue his friends.
I enjoyed this book more than the first. The characters are stronger and their friendships have grown. We see new characters and new situations. The messages of kindness, hard work, using your brain, loyalty, and the love of family and friends are strong in this book. Once again the illustrations add so much to the story that children will love it. A great addition to a school, public or personal library. Thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is great if you just need to be entertained and aren't looking for a book with a lot of deeper meaning. While it does have some and themes and family and friendship run throughout it, it's still a middle grade novel. I enjoyed it quite a lot. The illustrations were just as amazing in this book as the first one in the series. The green definitely gave it an effect like you were out in the woods :). I would recommend this series. It's just a fun series. Kind of gothic, kind of mystery, kind of funny. A bit of everything. 5 out of 5 stars.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A very imaginative graphic novel about a boy (Warren) who manages a hotel that walks on legs and moves from location to location. There is an array of unique characters. There are villainous witches and a man who assumes Warren's identity (a mimic) and takes over the hotel for a time. I read an Advanced Reader's Copy and the drawings by Will Staehle really added a lot to the story. (They were only partially done - the first seventy pages.) I really think the book will be popular with young adults and Comicon types
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Warren, Uncle Rupert, Petula, Mr. Friggs, Chef Bunion, Sketchy, and Beatrice are back. This book does pick up from the first one but not to worry as you can still read this book having not read the first one. However, I can tell you that after reading this book you will want to go back and read Warren the 13th and the All-Seeing Eye. The characters that author, Tania has created for this series is great. They are all diverse but that is what makes them so great. Each one brings something fun to the story. Although, Uncle Rupert is just a big child in an adult's body. There were some super stars in this book. Petula, Mr. Friggs, and Sketchy all got more leading roles this time. It was nice to see Petula having that lead role. I got to know her better and she had a few new surprises this time. Of course, everyone loves Sketchy. Additionally, this book took the readers outside of the hotel and introduced some new villains and friends. I can't wait to see what new grand adventure the gang encounter in the next book. Warren is a loveable hero. Warren for president!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Twelve-year-old Warren is the owner of a hotel that can walk. This hotel takes its guests and workers around the countryside as they enjoy their stay. But little does Warren know someone else wants control of his fabulous hotel. After Warren is separated from his hotel, he finds himself on an adventure of a lifetime in a forest full of witches, swindlers, and talking trees. Can Warren save his beloved hotel?I absolutely loved the illustrations in this sequel. Yet, the illustrations are not the only element in this book full of life and detail. Author, Tania del Rio, fills the page with rich, vivid sensory details sucking the reader into Warren’s adventure. I felt I was right there, next to Warren, living in his crazy world. The magical elements in this book capture the imagination of the kid in all of us. A must have for any classroom/school library!
