About this audiobook

What can parents do to help their youngest children in their task of self-formation? How does the Montessori method of hands-on learning and self-discovery relate to the youngest infants? This authoritative and accessible book answers these and many other questions. Based on Dr. Maria Montessori's instructions for raising infants, its comprehensive exploration of the first three years incorporates the furnishings and tools she created for the care and comfort of babies. From the design of the baby's bedroom to the child-sized kitchen table, from diet and food preparation to clothing and movement, the authors provide guidance for the establishment of a beautiful and serviceable environment for babies and very young children. They introduce concepts and tasks, taking into account childrens' "sensitive periods" for learning such skills as dressing themselves, food preparation, and toilet training. Brimming with anecdote and encouragement, and written in a clear, engaging style, Montessori from the Start is a practical and useful guide to raising calm, competent, and confident children.

Most of the book was good. However, some of the breastfeeding advice was flat out incorrect. Mamas, please don’t “prepare” your nipples for nursing by rubbing them with a washcloth or anything else for that matter. Correct latch is the only way to keep nursing from beinf painful. That’s it. There was some other incorrect nursing advice, that I can’t remember off the top of my head. Also, the ideas presented about how to run the household sound good in theory. It would have been nice for them to give advice about how to realistically fit all of that into each day.

I wish she would have gone through more specific examples on how to put some of these ideas into practice. Also, I didn't love how it jumped around from age to age in no type of chronological order.

What has this book inspired me to think and do as a new father of a 1 year old girl?To observe more and try to teach her to be independent by showing her how to do things like soap herself instead of doing it all for her. To provide order in her environment by having a simple play space with a bookshelf used to separate her toys and only putting out a few books which we rotate every once in a while and having a few toys out, trying to go for wooden toys which allow her the ability to control the play and provide her with a sense of completion such as the stacking wooden toy. The hardest advice for me to follow from this book is to stick to a routine/schedule and provide consistency for her.

This book has many interesting points on parenting, but overall it's a bit too dry. I wish it went into more specifics on Montessori practices, but it seems to assume some prior Montessori knowledge. It's a nice overview of the Montessori method for young children though and I'm glad I read it as a comparison to other child rearing methods.
