About this audiobook
An engrossing and suspenseful novel for fans of Liane Moriarty and Amy Hatvany about an affluent suburban family whose carefully constructed facade starts to come apart with the unexpected arrival of an endangered young girl.
I have something for you. When Quinn Cruz receives that cryptic text message from her older sister Nora, she doesn’t think much of it. They haven’t seen each other in nearly a year and thanks to Nora’s fierce aloofness, their relationship consists mostly of infrequent phone calls and an occasional email or text. But when a haunted Nora shows up at the lake near Quinn's house just hours later, a chain reaction is set into motion that will change both of their lives forever.
Nora’s “something” is more shocking than Quinn could have ever imagined: a little girl, cowering, wide-eyed, and tight-lipped. Nora hands her over to Quinn with instructions to keep her safe, and not to utter a word about the child to anyone, especially not their buttoned-up mother who seems determined to pretend everything is perfect. But before Quinn can ask even one of the million questions swirling around her head, Nora disappears, and Quinn finds herself the unlikely caretaker of a girl introduced simply as Lucy.
While Quinn struggles to honor her sister’s desperate request and care for the lost, scared Lucy, she fears that Nora may have gotten involved in something way over her head—something that will threaten them all. But Quinn’s worries are nothing compared to the firestorm that Nora is facing. It’s a matter of life and death, of family and freedom, and ultimately, about the lengths a woman will go to protect the ones she loves.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow! Loved it. It was suspenseful and original. I didn’t want it to end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story line. Strong distinct female characters. Supporting characters provide additional interest. Just when you think you know the clues point elsewhere. An anti-climatic ending but really an enjoyable book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fabulous!! Entertaining and enjoyable. Enjoyed very much. I would recommend
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Engaging read. Many interesting concepts are presented in this story about love and relationships and what it means to be a mother. The author's background as a non-traditional mother in rural America lends credence to the views presented. Perfect for a discussion group. The suspense element is somewhat lacking as the clues are a bit heavy-handed.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A well written suspense story. I love the alternating voices of the Sanford women who told different aspects of the story through their eyes.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I purchased this book from Amazon to read and discuss with @saltwaterreads for December 2017.???? Little Broken Things by Nicole Baart. Nora has a secret and it all begins with the little girl that she dropped off with her sister Quinn and demanded she keep the girl safe and keep her whereabouts a secret. However, the secrets that come undone are not just about the little girl that began them all. They are deep, dark family secrets that everyone in this book has overlooked or hidden for a very long time. The characters in this book are very realistic. The family dynamics in the book are complicated and only become more and more complicated as you read on. In the end, all things broken only make you stronger. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I am left with many thoughts as I finish “Little Broken Things” “A Novel” by Nicole Baart, Atria Books, November 2017. The timeline of this story is within the last 5 years, and the setting is mostly in a small town by the lake. The Genres for this story are mostly Fiction, and Mystery and Suspense. The author describes her characters as complex, complicated and dysfunctional. I do appreciate that the author describes certain problems that we see in society today.Quinn Basset is surprised when her estranged sister, Nora arranges to meet her with a cryptic message, “I have something for you.” Nora’s “something” turns out to be not only a tremendous surprise, but Quinn’s family now is in terrible danger. Nora’s surprise is a little girl named Lucy who looks just like Nora. As soon as Nora leaves Lucy, she quickly departs. Lucy is extremely withdrawn and frightened. Nora had wanted Quinn to keep Lucy a secret from their Mother, who lives across the lake, and from everyone else. Why is Nora leaving a little girl that looks just like her with her sister? Can you imagine a six-year-old being abandoned, and not knowing why? Why is there all kinds of danger imminent? How will Quinn and the rest of the family deal with this situation? Both Quinn and Nora have grown up quite comfortably, but in an extremely dysfunctional family. Their father is now deceased, and Liz their mother can either be too laid back or too aggressive. The story moves slowly, but there is some intrigue, suspense and mystery.Nicole Baart discussed the role of family, especially mother, sisters, and daughters. What exactly is a good mother? …a good sister?…..a good daughter? The author discusses the importance of family, trust, love, support, self-worth, and hope.I appreciate that the author talks about such issues in society today , as rape, pedophiles, physical and emotional abuse of women and children, neglected and abandoned children, and family problems and entitlement. These are issues that can’t be neglected or pushed away. Yet, they do exist. After reading “Little Broken Things”, I have many thoughts.I would like to thank NetGalley, Atria Books, Nicole Baart, and the Great Thoughts,Great Readers Ninjas for an ARC for my honest opinion and review. I would recommend this novel for those readers that enjoy reading a suspenseful read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A special thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.Past secrets and strained relationships are at the heart of Nicole Baart's newest novel, Little Broken Things. Nora, estranged from her sister, Quinn, sends a cryptic text before showing up on her doorstep with a six-year-old girl. Nora abruptly leaves the girl in Quinn's care with the instructions to keep her safe, and not to ask any questions. Quinn and her mother, Liz, believe that the girl may be Nora's daughter. By telling the story through multiple viewpoints—Quinn, Nora, Liz, and Nora's friend, Tiffany—Baart slowly reveals the circumstances that led Nora to leaving the little girl in her sister's care. Other past indiscretions are also brought to light to help explain why the relationships between the women are so strained. Not everything is how it appears from the outside; Liz kept up appearances at all costs, no matter how exhausting and this was the trade off to preserve what she envisioned her image to be as a wife, mother, friend, and socialite. At times this novel is not an easy read; Baart tackles some pretty big issues. Even though I wasn't blown away with the ending, I still enjoyed this exploration of familial relationships. Sometimes the most fragile bonds are with those we love the most.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I predict that this book will be one of THE books to read this winter. Thanks to the author for giving me a chance to read an early copy to read and enjoy early. I have read other books by Nicole Baart but in Little Broken Things, she is absolutely at the top of her game - it's a wonderful story about family and love and the secrets that we keep to protect our family, even when those secrets cause more harm than intended. This novel is told by three women Quinn, who lives near her mother with her artist-husband Walker, Nora, the oldest daughter and the wild child who ran away right after high school and the mom Liz, who has spent her entire life trying to be the perfect wife and perfect mother and made herself into a person that her daughters are unable to trust or connect with. Add to these three women, a small girl, Lucy, who Nora leaves with Quinn for protection but protection from what or who? Quinn doesn't know and her mother isn't supposed to find out about. Overall this is the story of love in families and how far family members will go to protect those that they love. It's suspenseful and kept me turning the pages long into the night to fund out the true story behind Lucy and her involvement with other family members. This is a must read book for readers who enjoy well written family drama and suspense. I highly, highly recommend it!
