About this audiobook
Becoming an effective IT manager presents a host of challenges--from anticipating emerging technology to managing relationships with vendors, employees, and other managers. A good IT manager must also be a strong business leader. This book invites you to accompany new CIO Jim Barton to better understand the role of IT in your organization. You'll see Jim struggle through a challenging first year, handling (and fumbling) situations that, although fictional, are based on true events. You can read this book from beginning to end, or treat is as a series of cases. You can also skip around to address your most pressing needs. For example, need to learn about crisis management and security? Read chapters 10-12. You can formulate your own responses to a CIO's obstacles by reading the authors' regular "Reflection" questions. You'll turn to this book many times as you face IT-related issues in your own career.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thought provoking and useful guide to business technology. In you're in a leadership role, business or technology, in a non SaaS-specific company, you will experience all challenges outlined in this book.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Though old, but still holds relevance to the current situation
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyable tale that touched on many real life scenarios. The characters were believable if slightly optimistic.
This book is similar in many ways to The Phoenix Project, but that book had more actionable ideas.
Recommended. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's hard to pull off such an instructive business book by means of a fictional story. These three did it, creating an entertaining story line and realistic characters to convey what could otherwise be a very dry set of key points. This book would be useful for any manager, but especially those in the IT and other specialized technical areas. Key points I value most include: making a habit of knowing what you don't know, developing models for processes and organizational dynamics (while realizing they are models, to be adapted and refined as conditions change), avoiding assuming more than you should about people, and emphasizing relationships and talent over projects and tactics.
