About this audiobook

1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London’s most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry. And in all truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate rake, nobody does it better …
—Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1814

But this time the gossip columnists have it wrong. Anthony Bridgerton hasn’t just decided to marry—he’s even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended’s older sister, Kate Sheffield—the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate’s the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams …

Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands—and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Kate’s determined to protect her sister—but she fears her own heart is vulnerable. And when Anthony’s lips touch hers, she’s suddenly afraid she might
not be able to resist the reprehensible rake herself …

The hero was harder to like in this book he was quite emotionally abusive. Simon was much more likeable.

I had forgotten why this is the only book of the series that I never purchased in paper for my bookshelves. But it didn’t take long for me to remember. Anthony is an absolute trash human being in this book. He is physically abusive (but he didn’t mean to hurt her just scare her. Actually damaging her was just an accident when his temper got away with him.) He’s mentally abusive- over and over again. He also lusts after Kate while still fully intending to marry her sister. He forced himself on her “until he finally felt her body soften with acceptance”. Kate overheard him trying to make an alliance with a mistress while also courting her sister. He tells the mistress that he sees no problem screwing around with someone else as long as you don’t love your wife- which has to be one of the most absurd things I have ever read, the disgusting pig. He knows he will basically destroy Kate’s sister’s life if he convinces her to fall in love with him and he just doesn’t give AF because every. Single. Thing. Is about Anthony. All Anthony-all the time.

Kate is supposed to be feisty, but other than a couple of initial interactions, she quickly becomes a total pushover. After she overhears him with his mistress “wannabe” , then he assaults her physically and emotionally and kisses her against her will, any good sister would have warned Edwina. She would have told her what he had said and done, not left her sister open to be manipulated by this pig. Later, he occasionally says or does something nice, and Kate responds by realizing he is such a nice, good person. It is absurd.

BUT it is also a classic mentality of someone with low self esteem who is being bullied by a narcissist. That person then shows some small kindness, and their victim spends the rest of the relationship chasing the addictive high of their kindness/approval.

You all know that meme of the little blonde girl looking absolutely disgusted? That was my expression for 85% of this book. I mean that literally. My husband came in and literally said “What the h3ll are you listening to and WHY?” Based solely on the revulsion on my face.
Sympathizing with Anthony’s trauma does not make me have any desire to excuse his abuse of other people. Pure and simple. I hate his guts.

I am so sorry I refreshed my memory of this book. I am keeping my fingers crossed that when Netflix does the adaptation of this book that they take a lot of liberties during screenwriting to tone down the worst of his abuse, sexual coercion, and being a pig who would manipulate an innocent girl into a marriage when he knows he plans to cheat on her and treat her like an object. He needs a great deal of character growth to be a “hero” of any kind.

I love historical romance. I also love a good enemies to lovers romance. The banter between Anthony and Kate is so perfect. I laughed so much reading this book. I cannot wait to read more in this series.

I really enjoyed the audiobook and I’m even more appreciative of the fact that I could speed the reading. I have no problems with it expect that the reader’s Anthony voice was interesting.

The narration by Ms. land or was very pleasant. The enemies to lovers trope is always fun to read, but the hero is despicable and the heroine lacks consistency, integrity, maturity and depth.

    Audiobook: Narrator - Rosalyn Landor

What an amazing narration! Ms. Landor was exceptional with each character giving them their own unique tone and cadence. She brought this story to life in a way that, in my experience, isn’t easily found, especially in romance audios. I experienced the same in the previous audio and once again found myself so absorbed, I chose to listen to this long after the time I usually turn it off.

I found this story to be almost, but not quite, as good as the first book. However, it still beats so many other books that I have listened/read and loved in the past.

There was quite the sizzle and spark between Anthony and Kate as they battled each other. I love a good enemies-to-lovers story and this one was wonderful. I couldn’t get enough of this couple and by the time the paille-maille game concluded, I was rolling with laughter and absolutely in love with Kate.

I was concerned I wouldn’t like Anthony when I realized he would be courting Kate’s sister, but being allowed into this thoughts made it all the better as I could see what his real feelings were. I may not have loved him as much as Simon, but he came very close to it.

This book was absolutely delightful! I liked it better than the first, and I adored the first book a lot. I disliked Antony so much in the beginning and grew to love him as Mary did! I’m not a big romance reader but these books make me swoon lol.

The first book was a bland version of S1 of Brigerton, this one though was so different from S2 that it was just awful. Anthony's personality is about the only thing I feel was familiar, the entire storyline around the Sheffield sisters was garbage though. I really don't understand how these books managed to inspire anyone into saying "let's make a show of this!" And kudos for the show writers deviating from the source material in such a way they transform these bland as untoasted white bread stories into tastefully steamy episodes with a fun story backdrop.
