Descrição
The harrowing true story of one man's life in—and subsequent escape from—North Korea, one of the world's most brutal totalitarian regimes.
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.
In this memoir translated from the original Japanese, Ishikawa candidly recounts his tumultuous upbringing and the brutal thirty-six years he spent living under a crushing totalitarian regime, as well as the challenges he faced repatriating to Japan after barely escaping North Korea with his life. A River in Darkness is not only a shocking portrait of life inside the country but a testament to the dignity—and indomitable nature—of the human spirit.

This was probably the best book I read so far this year.
It gripped me from the very first page and I found myself so touched by the story and so attached to the characters and their fate.
The Title of the book says "One Man's Escape from North Korea", yet the story is about much more.
A River in Darkness talks about this man's life; first in Japan, then when he and his family were taken 'back' to "Heaven on earth", or so they were told until they were slapped by the harsh truth. The book then delves into his life in North Korea and all the hardships he goes through while there, then eventually his escape from there.
It was so heartbreaking and raw and full of emotion. I felt every word of it, I cried multiple times while reading this book. To think there are people out there who suffer that much and don't have even the most basic rights is shattering.
All in all this was such a wonderful, eye-opening read and I can't possibly give it justice no matter how many words I write in this review. So I'll just say GO READ IT
Because there really isn’t coverage of the insides of North Korea, most of us don’t really have a true picture of what is going on. We know it’s not an ideal situation, sure, but we don’t realize people are crawling around on mountaintops scavenging for poisonous weeds to eat along with their 5 grains of rice. We don’t fully understand the propaganda that has spilled from the top for decades and upon decades.
I urge each and every person to read this book. While the topics are hard to read (and stomach) at times, these are things we need to know. And so much of what has happened in North Korea’s past, I fear, is rearing its ugly head again.
Thank you to the brave souls, including Masaji Ishikawa, who have shared their stories in order to educate the rest of the world. In hopes that, somehow, someway, we can all band together to help these poor people. Thank you to Amazon for publishing this story and making it so widely available to readers. The world needs this book.
Grab a box of tissues. I could barely get a sentence out without tears consuming me when I read this book. It is a book that has undoubtedly changed me as a person.
