About this audiobook
Real heartbreak is unmistakable. We think of nothing else. We feel nothing else. We care about nothing else. Yet while we wouldn’t expect someone to return to daily activities immediately after suffering a broken limb, heartbroken people are expected to function normally in their lives, despite the emotional pain they feel. Now psychologist Guy Winch imagines how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotion—if only we can understand how heartbreak works, we can begin to fix it.
Through compelling research and new scientific studies, Winch reveals how and why heartbreak impacts our brain and our behavior in dramatic and unexpected ways, regardless of our age. Emotional pain lowers our ability to reason, to think creatively, to problem solve, and to function at our best. In How to Fix a Broken Heart he focuses on two types of emotional pain—romantic heartbreak and the heartbreak that results from the loss of a cherished pet. These experiences are both accompanied by severe grief responses, yet they are not deemed as important as, for example, a formal divorce or the loss of a close relative. As a result, we are often deprived of the recognition, support, and compassion afforded to those whose heartbreak is considered more significant.
Our heart might be broken, but we do not have to break with it. Winch reveals that recovering from heartbreak always starts with a decision, a determination to move on when our mind is fighting to keep us stuck. We can take control of our lives and our minds and put ourselves on the path to healing. Winch offers a toolkit on how to handle and cope with a broken heart and how to, eventually, move on.

Ever since I have been doing everything and anything to improve myself and work towards my goals.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I found it helpfull when you are going through a break up or loss. I think he contributes a lot by exposing how Institutions diminishes the importance of suffering a heart break or a pet loss. I've been trough both, and also the loss of my father, and I can see very clear what he points out.
I would have like him to also talk from the point of view of the one that finishes the relationship and not only the one that is left, as there is also grief on that side.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I learned about this book from this author interview with Jordan Harbinger. I remember then that he said that the most underrated pain is that from a breakup or pet loss. So I mentally made a note to check it out when in times of need.
The time of need, unfortunately came. So I returned to this.
I felt seen, understood and i was able to understand myself. Sometimes I laugh. I cried many other times, not just of sadness, but because of being able to hear, what I could not express.
Simple, direct, yet with much compassion that you don't usually receive for this issue.
Also I appreciated the length, while it was well documented I didn't find it as tedious to read as most psychological books, especially in the face of grief that may dwindle our patient, ability to focus and learning abilities.
I don't know if it is just the fact that this book came into my life at the right time that I appreciate it more, but if we only judge a book by the impact it made, this one did in the time of need. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Base on the case happen... - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This audiobook is really helping me dealing with my broken heart, and most important, is helping me to find who I “used to be” before my last very complicated relationship. I highly recommend this audiobook.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thank you so much. This book really helps me heal. Recommended!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The examples given are encompassing the many possible reasons one can go through and heal. I went through something similar but I still may need to take notes and keep practicing.
But at the end of the day they all are examples which aren’t what you maybe going through ... so it’s always good to talk to a professional and you know what it’s ok even if you are a bloke.
