About this audiobook
When Ruby first marries the dashing Frenchman she meets in a coffee shop, she pictures a life strolling arm in arm along French boulevards, awash in the golden afternoon light. But it’s 1938, and war is looming on the horizon.
Unfortunately, her marriage soon grows cold and bitter, her husband Marcel, distant and secretive—all while the Germans flood into Paris, their sinister swastika flags waving in the breeze. When Marcel is killed, Ruby discovers the secret he’d been hiding—he was a member of the French resistance—and now she is determined to take his place.
She becomes involved in hiding Allied soldiers—including a charming RAF pilot—who have landed in enemy territory. But her skills are ultimately put to the test when she begins concealing her twelve-year-old Jewish neighbor, Charlotte, whose family was rounded up by the Gestapo. Ruby and Charlotte become a little family, but as the German net grows tighter around Paris, and the Americans debate entering the combat, the danger increases. No one is safe.
“Set against all the danger and drama of WWII Paris, this heartfelt novel will keep you turning the pages until the very last word” (Mary Alice Monroe, New York Times bestselling author).

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A ride through the turmoil of WWII. Strong characters filled with hope and perseverance despite the chaos surrounding them. Touching to the end.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story line was very good but the main character Ruby asked to many silly questions and this drew everything out.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a love story of strength and faith! Love it

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The French accent is dreadful. This is a good story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The details and the nuances allowed intrigue and an element of surprise. It was humbling and refreshing.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was wonderfully narrated and amazing writing! I would highly recommend!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a wonderful heart wrenching story. The narrator of the audible was wonderful as well. If you like war stories this is a good one
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another good book about the work of the Resistance movement! U get so caught up in the characters! A tear jerker at the end!!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story itself kept my interest for the most part. Although the plot was rather predictable at times, and the dialogue mundane. Describing Lancaster, California, as ‘heaven on earth’ made me laugh out loud. It’s irritating when American authors writing British dialogue using vocabulary that’s out of place (like « gotten »). I wish I had chosen to read the book instead of listening to it. The female narrator murdered the British and French accents! The male narrator was good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a very good book, we’ll written and historically accurate. I do have to say I didn’t like the ending but the ending just makes it a very realistic story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5oh my goodness! this book had me feeling so many emotions! such a good read
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Just when I thought I knew where the story was headed I was wrong. The characters grab you and real you in.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Very disappointing ending. I saw it coming and was hoping I was mistaken. Felt like a gimmick to “surprise” the reader. Otherwise a good read. I Enjoyed her other books more.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I listened to the audiobook and didn't like the way it was performed. The voice actor sounded like an infomercial. This could also be because the book read like an YA book with many unbelievable parts. I thought it was a historical fiction, but it was more of a romance set in WWII. And even the romance between the main characters was rather bland. There was very little character development, all characters were stereotypes and there's no way a child of Charlotte's age talks and thinks like she does. And after listening to the whole ten hours, I didn't like the ending.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One the best books I’ve ever read. I feel as though I heard first hand stories of the lives of people caught up in WWII
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of the best books I have ever read. Ruby is a character I shall never forget as long as I live.
Her story makes me a better person. I realize making a difference in this world matters. What may seem as tiny little acts of kindness may actually change someone’s life.
They always say, it’s the little things.
This is a book not to be missed. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Such a great story! I cried but I loved it!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very touching, uplifting and testament to human spirit-inspirational story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I don't often sob at the end of a book, but i did when this book reached the last chapter or two. Well crafted journey of everyday heroes during a war free of us would survive of it landed on our doorsteps today. We can't survive without the internet for an hour or a device in hand. The citizens of France and Britain and the rest of Europe lived though difficult times and this is one of the best written fictions I've ever read that was set in that era. Bravo!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It’s a nice book, creates characters, but in a way it’s simple and the psychology is not too deep
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Tear jerker alert! Wow what an amazing read! The characters are fantastic!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It took me a little while to get into this story, but once I got sucked in I stayed there and zoomed through the last 75% of this book. I fell a little in love with both of the main couples in this story.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I rolled my eyes a lot at Ruby and Thomas and stayed for Charlotte
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wonderful story! Highly recommend. The narration is great.
