Descrição

Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni's coming-of-age story is, according to Booklist, "a novel that, if it doesn't cross entirely over into John Irving territory, certainly nestles in close to the border."

Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called "Devil Boy" or Sam "Hell" by his classmates; "God's will" is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered, buoyed by his mother's devout faith, his father's practical wisdom, and his two other misfit friends.

Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God's idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls.

Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design—especially not the tragedy that caused him to turn his back on his friends, his hometown, and the life he'd always known. Running from the pain, eyes closed, served little purpose. Now, as he looks back on his life, Sam embarks on a journey that will take him halfway around the world. This time, his eyes are wide open—bringing into clear view what changed him, defined him, and made him so afraid, until he can finally see what truly matters.

I listened to the audiobook & loved it so much that I ordered the written book also. I’m going to enjoy reading it again. Usually if a book is predictable I don’t like it, but this book was different. It was written so well & was so full of heart that I had to keep listening & couldn’t put it down.

Well written and very very touching. I was moved many times.

I’ve never posted a review of a book. I loved the story, but even more I loved the message. As a person of faith who reads voraciously, I rarely encounter a view of faith that is realistic- faced with hardships and questions about Gods faithfulness. This story asks the questions but also finds some real answers. Thanks you.

Pretty ordinary to say the least. Cliched and tedious with some teenage predictable sex thrown in.

Such a beautiful coming of age story of a boy who was diagnosed with ocular albinism. Of what family and friendships truly mean.

Absolutely beautiful. Heartwarming, really leaves a mark in your heart.

This story took me back to my Catholic schooling and childhood! Amazing story!

Superbly written and narrated. A moving novel that should be added to the TOP of your list. This is now my all time favorite novel. When the last word is read you'll feel a sense of loss and longing like you've moved away from a close friend from your hometown. Enjoy, learn and be ready to be captivated.

What a wonderful journey through an extraordinary, yet ordinary, life. A coming of age story where the protagonist is struggling to believe in himself when much of the world sees him as unacceptably different. I listened to the audio version and, while many author narrators are marginal, Robert Dugoni did a fabulous job of narrating. This book will especially resonate with those who have felt marginalized, different, bullied.

Truly exceptional, not least because it was read by the author.

There was nothing extraordinary about this book, it was quite a drag

Great voice and storyline, makes all the difference with audiobooks.

I both laughed and cried a number of times ... believable characters you really care about. Sometimes the timeline was a bit jumbled, but not off-putting. Some unexpected plot turns keep the story interesting all the way through.

I felt such empathy with this character, Sam. Thru bullying, isolation, and self-doubt he kept going. He is born with ocular albinism, red eyes, this being different sets home up for ridicule and others fear him. Such an entertaining, insightful, kind of stretching what could happen story, but full of Catholic faith.

An extraordinary book that captivates what every mother wants for their children. I laughed and I cried and I didn’t want it to end. As an educator for students with disabilities, this spoke to my soul. Such a captivating book. I couldn’t wait to finish it but then was sad it was over. Everyone needs to read this. Life changing.

A very well written novel that made me laugh, cry, and stop and think. The book followed the life story of Sam in such an organized manner that I never felt lost or confused as to what was going on. Dugoni is a master story teller.

I enjoyed reading about Sam Hell and his life with his parents , friends, and the church. His red eyes where truly his blessing.

I didn’t want the story to end! Terrific tale made all the better by the narrator.

It was a nice, pleasant journey and different from some of Robert's other books. Unlike the other series, this book needs no sequel. You will feel complete and satisfied when you finish this story.

This is a new favorite for me. Please give it a chance; it's extraordinary and delightful in so many ways. You will fall in love with Sam, Mickie, and Ernie, and discover a saint in Maddie Hill who never loses faith. This is a heartrendingly beautiful story that break your heart, but also send you soaring. Quirky, yet incredibly sweet.
