About this audiobook
The cast of characters includes not only famous figures like Jim Bowie but unknown, unsung men: John Purdy Reynolds, the wandering Pennsylvania surgeon; George Kimball, the industrious New York hatter, Micajah Autry of Tennessee, who was a far better poet than a businessman. And then there are the Mexicans: the fabulous Santa Anna; the smooth Colonel Almonte; the forlorn private Juan Basquez, who only wanted to stay home and make shoes.
Walter Lord
Walter Lord (1917–2002) was an acclaimed and bestselling author of literary nonfiction best known for his gripping and meticulously researched accounts of watershed historical events. His first book was The Fremantle Diary (1954), a volume of Civil War diaries that became a surprising success. But it was Lord’s next book, A Night to Remember (1955), that made him famous. Lord went on to use the book’s interview-heavy format as a template for most of his following works, which included detailed reconstructions of the Pearl Harbor attack in Day of Infamy (1957), the battle of Midway in Incredible Victory (1967), and the integration of the University of Mississippi in The Past That Would Not Die (1965).

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If your review is simply that a book isn't woke enough, please just be honest and say that. This book is well researched and reads like fiction. It is very good and a pleasure to read.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A cracking overview of the events at the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinta. The final chapter looks at the myths of the Alamo and tests them for their accuracy.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Walter Lord was a competent researcher who followed up his book on the loss of the Titanic, with this detailed account of the storming of the Alamo in the Texas war of independence. While it is good within its limits do not look for much about the Mexicans and the wider reasons for the revolt. There is nothing about slavery in this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I recently finished this book and thought it was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Walter Lord uses vivid imagery and excellent descriptions of the events which took place around the Alamo without boring the reader and dragging out the book.
