About this audiobook
"Wildly imaginative." —Barack Obama on The Three-Body Problem trilogy
A new standalone military science fiction adventure from the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of the Three-Body Trilogy.
This program is read by Feodor Chin, voice of Zenyatta in Overwatch.
When Chen’s parents are incinerated before his eyes by a blast of ball lightning, he devotes his life to cracking the secret of mysterious natural phenomenon. His search takes him to stormy mountaintops, an experimental military weapons lab, and an old Soviet science station.
The more he learns, the more he comes to realize that ball lightning is just the tip of an entirely new frontier in particle physics. Although Chen’s quest provides a purpose for his lonely life, his reasons for chasing his elusive quarry come into conflict with soldiers and scientists who have motives of their own: a beautiful army major with an obsession with dangerous weaponry, and a physicist who has no place for ethical considerations in his single-minded pursuit of knowledge.
Ball Lightning, by award-winning Chinese science fiction author Cixin Liu, is a fast-paced audiobook about what happens when the beauty of scientific inquiry runs up against a push to harness new discoveries with no consideration of their possible consequences.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Thoroughly enjoying except that in some parts the descriptions go into bits of dry theoretical physics and information which are really difficult to follow on while listening to an audiobook. This book definitely goes in the same tradition of Clarke and it integrates several aspects of armed warfare that mingles with scientific research and fundamental science.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Liu Cixin’s sci-fi actually introduced me to real science and possible applicability (theoretical as of now) but plausible. As book progresses you learn science through submergence along the story plot.
Win-Win -- story and educational intellectual value.
In general, his books offer to me more intellectual action sci-fi. Slower sometimes than other authors, but more intellectually fulfilling.
This book gave me the same. Now I am more prepared to read 2nd book in The Three-Body Problem series. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a remarkable novel filled with mystery, romance, war and some strange (almost certainly completely wrong) but deep thoughts on physics. Personally, I consider it far superior to the equally imaginative Three Body Problem. I hope you can read it with the fascination and wonder that it conveyed to me!
As a physicist the novel is more fiction than science but this didn’t detract from my listening pleasure. The Afterword explains my reaction. The reading is also excellent evoking the wonder and the horror at unfolding events.
