Descrição

A profound and provocative examination of America in crisis, where unemployment, deindustrialization, and a bitter hopelessness and malaise have resulted in an epidemic of diseases of despair—drug abuse, gambling, suicide, magical thinking, xenophobia, and a culture of sadism and hate.

America, says Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis, the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress, the pornification of culture, the rise of magical thinking, the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. As our society unravels, we also face global upheaval caused by catastrophic climate change. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet.

Donald Trump rode this disenchantment to power. In America: The Farewell Tour, Hedges argues that neither political party, now captured by corporate power, addresses the systemic problem. Until our corporate coup d'état is reversed these diseases will grow and ravage the country. A poignant cry reported from communities across the country, America: The Farewell Tour seeks to jolt us out of our complacency while there is still time.

the deconstruction of what lies at the facade of americana. the edges of a frayed flag still flapping whispering the malcontent and discontent from a manufactured content made to blind hearts and fool minds.

Thanks Chris! Finally, TRUTH! I think you may have helped save my sanity. I love you. Not in a creepy way though.

This book is amazing! The reading is fantastic, but the content is life-changing!

This was a very hard book to read. Hard not because it was academically dense, rather, hard because it described the stark reality that so many in our nation experience. The author does not pull any punches, nor does he soft sell what he has seen, and the fears that he has. This book is not for the faint of heart. This book will ask you to look at aspects of your world and reconsider them. This book will ask you to make hard choices in your own life, it will ask you to reflect upon your own sense of convenience and look at the cost of that convenience for your fellow humans. Are you enjoying products made at the hands of modern slaves? Does your entertainment encourage the degradation of other human beings? Does your absence of action provide tacit support of the marginalization and dehumanization of fellow human beings? All of this and more are the questions of the way you live that are within this text. In the end, take great care, reading this book will leave you changed.

In-depth look at the decaying of modern Western Civilization and ways we could theoretically recover.

A hyper-lucid, quasi-spiritual experience; Hedges shoves the reader out of the matrix.

Very impactful. At times this is a hard book to hear/read. I think we should all take a good hard look at ourselves, collectively, and this book will be an important aid in that process.

This book was a big disappointment. I wish it had been more balanced.

Not the feel-good book of the month, but a good look at the head fakes the capitalist state has fooled us with. “Resistance must be our vocation.”
