About this audiobook

Emily thinks she's lost everything . . . until a mysterious painting leads her to what she wants most in the world. The new novel from the author of international bestsellers The Sweetness of Forgetting and The Life Intended shows why her books are hailed as "engaging" (People), "absorbing" (Kirkus Reviews) and "enthralling" (Fresh Fiction).

Emily Emerson is used to being alone; her dad ran out on the family when she was just a kid, her mom died when she was seventeen, and her beloved grandmother has just passed away as well. But when she's laid off from her reporting job, she finds herself completely at sea . . . until the day she receives a beautiful, haunting painting of a young woman standing at the edge of a sugarcane field under a violet sky. That woman is recognizable as her grandmother-and the painting arrived with no identification other than a handwritten note saying, "He always loved her."

Emily is hungry for roots and family, so she begins to dig. And as she does, she uncovers a fascinating era in American history. Her trail leads her to the POW internment camps of Florida, where German prisoners worked for American farmers . . . and sometimes fell in love with American women. But how does this all connect to the painting? The answer to that question will take Emily on a road that leads from the sweltering Everglades to Munich, Germany, and back to the Atlanta art scene before she's done.

Along the way, she finds herself tempted to tear down her carefully tended walls at last; she's seeing another side of her father, and a new angle on her painful family history. But she still has secrets, ones she's been keeping locked inside for years. Will this journey bring her the strength to confront them at last?

I made it halfway through. The pace was too slow to hold my intrigue. I did just read some of the reviews that the conclusion is good, but I still don't think I'll continue. I have too many other interesting books that I've saved on scribd, so I moved on. I did not like the main character and though the plot seemed intriguing, it failed to go anywhere (in my opinion).

If you can get past the narrator’s nasally voice, it’s a great story.

I did not know that German prisoners were kept in Florida or other parts of the US during WWII, so I found this book to be quite enlightening. So many secrets creates family strife that Emily has to handle. She finds her answers in many ways, and the book ends on a satisfying note, or as satisfying as it can be. I wanted to give Emily a good shake a few times when it came to her dealing with her father, but it all worked out in the end.

When We Meet Again is another WWII novel but told from a different perspective - that of a German prisoner of war in the US. I wasn't aware that over 425,000 members of the German military were interned as prisoners of war in the United States during World War II. They lived in camps all over the US and were used to help in areas such as agriculture and building. This dual timeline novel takes place in Florida in 1944 and present time. In the 1944 timeline, Margaret lives on a small farm in Florida where there are German pows working near. She makes eye contact with Peter and they gradually fall in love. Peter hadn't been a Nazi - just another young man who didn't believe in Hitler but was forced to serve in the German Army. They fall in love and she becomes pregnant right before the war ends and he is sent back to Germany. She has disgraced her family and leaves her home. The only letter that she got from Peter told her that he was marrying an old girlfriend. When Peter gets home to Munich, he is also shunned by his family - his father felt that he was a traitor because he got captured and had disgraced the family. Before he left, his father gave him the only letter that he said Margaret sent that told him she was pregnant. They never stop looking for each other for their entire lives. In the present day timeline, the main character is Emily. She is alone in the world, her father abandoned her when she was young, her grandmother Margaret had just died and she is feeling tremendous guilt over a baby that she had at 18, not too long after her mother died, that she gave up for adoption. She receives a painting of a woman who looks like her grandmother when she was younger and begins a search for the artist and the meaning behind the painting. During her search she not only finds out about her grandmother's past but also begins to understand some of the issues in her life. This book is about family, love, forgiveness not only of others but also forgiving yourself for past mistakes, but the main focus is on love. It's a wonderful book that I won't soon forget.

A good, solid read about two lovers during World War II who struggle to find each other in the war's aftermath, but whose love is carried down through generations and art. This is a good family story with plenty of time spent on forgiveness, making amends, and second chances. It's not a perfect story (a few of the secondary characters fell flat), but the conclusion is very satisfying and makes for enjoyable reading.

When We Meet Again by Kristin Harmel is a novel that takes us on a journey back to 1943. Emily Emerson is a journalist who was just laid off from work. Emily is at a low point in her life. She is alone (by choice) and out of work when she receives a package. When she opens up, she finds a painting. The package is from Germany and is a watercolor painting. It portrays a woman in a field wearing a red dress. The woman in the painting looks like her grandmother, Margaret. Is it her grandmother? Why was this painting sent to her and why now? Margaret passed away two months prior. It seems that Grandma had some secrets she never shared with Emily. The painting takes Emily on a journey into the past. Emily will travel to Munich, Germany, Belle Creek, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia in her search for answers. Emily will be given a chance to reconnect with her estranged father. Can she forgive him? More importantly, can Emily forgive herself for something she did when she was eighteen? Join Emily on her journey in When We Meet Again.Kristin Harmel is what I call a descriptive writer. She provides great details (and is a little long winded). The writing is good but I found the pace to be slow. The novel is interesting (good concept), but I was never drawn into the story. The book drags on a little too long (I think it felt that was because the pace was so slow). The lesson in the novel is about forgiveness of others and of one’s self (easier said than done). I give When We Meet Again 3.5 out of 5 stars. The romance in the book was sappy (best word to describe it) and artificial (felt fake). I believe you have to like the main character in order to enjoy the book, and I just did not like Emily. She has so many issues that she comes across as someone in her 20s (not her real age of 36). I have to quit reading stories that take place during World War II. I have yet to find one that is enjoyable (and I have read a lot of them during the past year) and believable. This book was just not for me.I received a complimentary copy of When We Meet Again in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and comments above are strictly my own.

Emily receives a painting in the mail. She reaches out to her estranged father for answers. They travel to Germany to research and hopefully mend their relationship. This story just keeps weaving a great tale from start to finish. The mystery behind the painting, Emily’s past choices, and her grandmother’s previous life all meld together and really create a fabulous story. And when Emily and her father travel to Germany, it clouds up the saga, but do not worry, they find the answers right here in the USA. Emily is a wonderful, loyal, and flawed person. She has made many mistakes and she holds on to a large amount of anger at her father. I love a flawed character that is also strong and smart. Emily fits this to a “T”. She is smart enough to know she needs to move on and quit holding onto past transgressions.I enjoyed learning about the history of WWII POW camps in the USA. I knew there had been several among our borders, I just did not realize how they worked or functioned. This was an added plus. This is a multilayered tale which takes the reader on a great ride. Between the story with Emily and the story about her grandmother’s past, this novel never stops. I was captivated from chapter one till THE END!I received this novel from Simon and Schuster as part of #XOXperts.
