Descrição

From New York Times bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde comes a moving novel about two strangers who find that kindness is a powerful antidote to fear.

Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn't belong. Not with his mother's new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father's wife. Not at school, where he's an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he's tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who's introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Mildred Gutermann, a German Jew who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, has been alone since her caretaker disappeared. She turns to Raymond for help, and as he tries to track Luis down, a deep and unexpected friendship blossoms between the two.

Despondent at the loss of Luis, Mildred isolates herself further from a neighborhood devolving into bigotry and fear. Determined not to let her give up, Raymond helps her see that for every terrible act the world delivers, there is a mirror image of deep kindness, and Mildred helps Raymond see that there's hope if you have someone to hold on to.

This was a beautiful book! I laughed and cried and at times, worried. I just kept wanting to know more, learn what would happen next. It’s an unusual story but, in my opinion, a beautiful one. Enjoy!

Have You Seen Luis Velez was mentioned as an example of a well written novel about real love - not Harlequin Romances - in our C-19 online Book Club along with Wurthing Heights, Persuasion, The Last of the Mohicans, Anna Karenina, The English Patient. True it is about a relationship that develops with ups and downs over the whole of the story and both parties are deeply changed. In this case it is between Raymond, 17, and Millie, 92.

Great story about being nice to others, presents a number of opportunities to think about how you would respond. Would be a great book to read with a teen to adult friend, or to share in a book club.

Thank you NetGalley and @lakeunionpublishing for giving me the chance to read the ARCHave You Seen Luis Velez? Is a heartwarming story about a young man who befriends an older woman who is blind. What they both learn through their friendship about themselves and each other is so very wonderful. I loved how the story progresses and all the lives that were affected by one individuals' actions. It is amazing how different situations bring out the best and worst in people.

Lindas Book Obsession Reviews "Have You Seen Luis Velez?" by Catherine Ryan Hyde, May 2019Catherine Ryan Hyde, Author of "Have You Seen Luis Velez" has written a unique, enthralling, emotional, intriguing, captivating and heartwarming novel.  The Genre for this story is Fiction. This is also a Beautiful Coming of Age Story.  I love everything about this wonderful book. Catherine Ryan Hyde is an amazing storyteller, and her vivid and colorful descriptions of her characters and the landscape are so realistic. The story takes place in and around New York City. The author describes her dramatic characters as complex and complicated.Raymond Jaffe, 17 years old feels like an outcast in his family.  His best friend is moving away, and his other friend is a kitten that he rescues. He is in his building when an older woman asks him if he or anyone has seen Luis Velez? As Raymond is speaking to Mildred Gutermann, who is 92 years old and blind, he realizes she has no caretaker. Raymond starts helping Mildred and is looking for Luis Velez, who had been helping Mildred. Meanwhile, Raymond and Mildred are becoming good friends. It seems there are a number of  Luis Velez's' in the phone book. Raymond goes and visits some of them. There are some interesting encounters, but Raymond has yet to find the correct Luis Velez.I appreciate that Catherine Ryan Hyde discusses the importance of kindness and friendship. Also discussed are the different prejudices and biases that are based on wealth and poverty, and religion and race.  The author writes about love, acceptance, friendship, family, kindness, love, and hope. I highly recommend this amazing book.

I do not know why I doubted Catherine Ryan Hyde. I should have known better. I completely judged this story. Even after starting it I was thinking I was going to DNF this. The more I read though, the more I loved this feel good story.I loved Ms. G and all of her wisdom. I also loved the relationship between Ms. G and Raymond. Their story was one of kindness and love (she is 90 so not a romantic love). I love their conversations and how Ms. G was really helping Raymond to find himself with no judgement. There is still good in this world, and stories like these just touch your heart. I laughed and I cried. I did not see some turns coming at all and did not realize this was going to take a legal turn. It covers so many different topics from sexuality, relationships, family, friendship, racism, and more. I do feel it went on a little too long at times. It is not a fast moving story at all, but more of one of those reads that will stick with you well after reading the last page. Overall, I really enjoyed this and highly recommend picking it up if you love those types of reads.

A wonderful feel good story about a friendship between a young man and an elderly, blind woman. Keep the tissues handy as you will need them!

This book is one that will stay with you. The characters are so well written! The story unfolds slowly but it is worth taking every turn just to keep up with the young man who is my new hero!

The recording was terrible. It had a lot of the ingredients for a great book. But the recording skipped sections and didn’t hold my bookmarks.
