About this audiobook
In the sequel to Clockwork Boys, Slate, Brenner, Caliban and Learned Edmund have arrived in Anuket City, the source of the mysterious Clockwork Boys. They even managed to build some trust in each other's skills. That trust is built on quicksand as the risks continue to escalate. But the secrets they're keeping could well destroy them, before the city even gets the chance...
Old foes and consequences of past decisions lurk in the shadows. Every team member's skills are required to succeed--even more so if they hope to survive.
The Wonder Engine never lets us forget our funny, broken group even as the action propels our heroes to new highs and lows. It shows that making the most of the rest of your life can be rewarding--no matter how many mechanical abominations you need to destroy to get there.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The characters and story are compelling, I keep looking forward to what's going to happen next and how the characters would react. The narration is OK, nothing special, and the narrator manages to do enough voices that I can keep track of who's speaking. However, the author's penchant of inserting the character's thoughts in the first person, e.g. 'What am I thinking this is stupid', already diverting in print form, is worsened in audiobook form. Those 'asides' break the flow of the scene, do not contribute anything substantive to the characterization or the plot, and are not even amusing or witty.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good book - it is the must for those who liked the previous one - it finishes the story, there is more of what was in the first book (Slate ia a great character).
On its own it is a bit weaker - predictable plot, nothing really new. Also the main chacter is a bit below her previous standards near the end of the book (in the cheap way "I know that what you did was absolutely necessary and we would be lost if you had not done it, but I will be irrationally mad at you anyway for several following chapters").
Overall I would recommend this series. Good mix of fantasy/romance and the great main character who will not stop with ironic comments/thoughs even when facing deadly danger.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Enjoyed the book, it was well written with relatable characters. Between this and "Clockwork Boys" it was a good series and I loved the narrator, she captured the essence of the book. Only feedback I'd give: I was planning on recommending to my young teen (13) bases off the first book, the second book had a couple "R" rated chapters that didn't seem to fit with the overall mood, which was quirky sardonic humor. Overall though, good book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Top. La voix de la narratrice est top. Et cette duologie est vraiment bien. Très drôle, des personnages attachants. Une écriture fluide, amusante et agréable. Je vais continuer à lire T kingfisher
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. Just wow. I loved this story and worldbuilding so much.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really neat story, interesting characters, and a deft touch with wordbuilding! :)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5After reading one of the Clockwork series, you have basically read all of the Clockwork series. I enjoyed the first few greatly, but realized quickly that they generally all follow the same pattern in the story building and character development.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Just listened to this novel a second time! It's my favorite of T Kingfisher's Paladin books, but they're all great. Something about Slate, though. She's a fantastic protagonist, and Kingfisher's world building is a thing of beauty and humor. Her city of the Capitol, Anuget City, the Dowager ruler--I haven't been this taken with a literary world since Discworld. And Ursula Vernon aka T Kingfisher is my new Terry Pratchett.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Smart, snarky and sexy. I highly recommend it. A very good adventure.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a great, great serie. Came as a total surprise. Loved it.
