About this audiobook

"With impeccable inflections and tones, El-Attar's narration embodies the quirky investigator and those who surround her. She personifies both the place and the people, making them come alive. Listeners will imagine they're traversing Cairo through the deep, dark night. This is a perfect listen for those who are short on time but want a thrilling audiobook." — AudioFile Magazine

Egypt, 1912. In an alternate Cairo infused with the otherworldly, the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities investigate disturbances between the mortal and the (possibly) divine. What starts off as an odd suicide case for Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi leads her through the city’s underbelly as she encounters rampaging ghouls, saucy assassins, clockwork angels, and plot that could unravel time itself, in P. Djèlí Clark's Tor.Com Original, A Dead Djinn in Cairo.

"Suehyla El-Attar’s narration has the vocal quality of slightly roughened silk, a gorgeously textured pleasure for the ear." -- Locus

Wow, wow, wow! This was so good! The writing style is so atmospheric and vivid I swear I'm in that alternate Cairo with Fatma. Loved the mythology and the fantasy infused in the story as well! Only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that the ending felt a little safe, anticlimactic if you will. Nevertheless, this was an amazing novella and I would love to read more stories in the same setting!

Very short, very fresh, not quite like anything I've read before. A genie-filled, feminist, steampunk whodunnit. Fast paced.

Sumptuous world-building and phenomenal characters. The whole premise is super exciting even if the ending was rushed but that's okay. Now to read more P. Djeli Clark!

It was cool. Picked up toward the end. I prefer her other titles but the Tram car titles sequel may bring this one full circle.

Djinns, ghouls, mystics, steampunk. A woman detective in a bowler hat and a murder mystery to solve. What's not to love? A perfect slice of life story set in a rich landscape full of detail and the narration is just perfect.

Such a fantastical, story flavoured wit zaatar, baklava and sjouk. A new view on the ,1800s-1900s WASPS coming over to Egypt to find a country up and running and had (gasps) culture or their own! Strong female characters make this a wonderful twist on typical Brits come over to explore!! Story.

A very very interesting world and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was well narrated by Suehyla El-Attar especially when it came to the proper pronunciation of names etc. I look forward to reading/listening to further stories with these characters in this world.
