About this audiobook
“This debut has it all: music, books, aliens, adventure, resistance, queerness, and a bold heroine tying it all together. ”—Ms. Magazine
Can a girl who risks her life for books and an Ilori who loves pop music work together to save humanity?
When a rebel librarian meets an Ilori commander…
Two years ago, a misunderstanding between the leaders of Earth and the invading Ilori resulted in the death of one-third of the world’s population. Today, seventeen-year-old Ellie Baker survives in an Ilori-controlled center in New York City. All art, books and creative expression are illegal, but Ellie breaks the rules by keeping a secret library.
When young Ilori commander Morris finds Ellie’s illegal library, he’s duty-bound to deliver her for execution. But Morris isn’t a typical Ilori…and Ellie and her books might be the key to a desperate rebellion of his own.
“The Sound of Stars is a marvelous genre-bending debut." —The Nerd Daily
“The Sound of Stars is a stunning exploration of the comforts that make us human and the horrors that challenge our humanity.”—K. Ancrum, author of The Wicker King
"This book has everything! Aliens set on conquering earth! A determined heroine with a hidden stash of books! And the power of music and stories to give those with every reason to hate the power to love. Who could want anything more?"—Joelle Charbonneau, New York Times bestselling author of The Testing and Verify

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I only got 12 out of thirty chapters in, so maybe my opinion doesn't count for much, but I gave up listening to this book. The writing was just not that good, in particular, the author seemed unaware of the "show don't tell" rule of writing. The ideas behind the book seem so promising, but, at least in my opinion, they were not executed well, and the characters were flat.
This only pertains to the audiobook, but I thought the narrators, especially the person narrating Janelle, were not very skilled.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is one of the best books I've listened in the past couple years. It's not perfect, but I adore it mainly because of characters and how their enemies to lovers romance is blooms. I liked female reader, but I felt pretty 'meh' about guy reader but it didn't stop me from getting into the story.I think the author had a unique take on alien invasions genre and was fascinated by the universe she created. Plus It was really great to see a black girl as the female lead in this type of genre. I just wish that the other two books had stuck with Ellie and Morris being the main characters. It would have been nice seeing how their romance developed further and how they both grew as characters. The other characters were unique and interesting, but I just found myself missing Ellie and Morris, and wishing that the other leads in the other two books had just been side characters. Please, do not get me wrong. The other two books are still good, the characters are interesting and you still will get tidbits of Ellie and Morris. Plus you get to explore the amazing universe this author illustrates with her words .however , it's just MY opinion that the overall series would've just been a bit better if the main characters had stayed the same in all three books. Either way, It's an amazing series. This book is amazing , the plot is addicting and I still found the ending sort of satisfying when it comes to the Ellie and Morris romance. If you are into the YA romance dystopian genre I definitely think you should give this a try!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. OMG I'm so glad I tried the audiobook version of this. It's wonderful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is so powerful. Highly recommend anyone to read
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story within The Sound of Stars is just as beautiful as the cover! In a world where aliens have invaded Earth and have prohibited all forms of art and expression, The Sound of Stars follows Ellie, a teen who runs a secret library, who's path crosses with M0R1s, an Ilori alien. The Ilori are raised to be emotionless, but M0r1s loves music and books. Their shared love for books and music bring them together, and they set off on a road trip to save Earth.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Kind of felt like fanfiction of another story that you'd go to for a relationship you wanted to read about, but the fanfic isn't great, was written about ten years ago, and was hastily wrapped up when the author got bored.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5First of all, the audiobook is incredible! The narrators were amazing in their portrayal. The book is one of my favourites, the characters have so much depth and I loved their dynamic.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excellent story of recognizing our differences and uniqueness even amidst great difficulty. It is set in Modern America and the aliens have invaded and are subjugating all humans. When Janelle Baker meets an Alien named Morris she is sure she is dead only to embark on an amazing journey to learn about herself and save humanity. It's post-apocalyptic- romance- science fiction mixed in with some social commentary. I'll definitely be looking for the next book!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Ugh the only thing that stock in my mind is the narrator keeps saying “libary”
