About this audiobook
and they don’t like what they see: the Wilson sisters yell at the dog because it is digging
in their garden and the Tracy twins chase it on their bikes and throw things at it.
Sam and Katie want the dog to know they’ll be its friends. They think it should have a
name. Most of all, they want it to like them.
But they make a big mistake, and after that, it’s hard to make things right. Because how
can you apologize to a dog? Especially one that won’t come near you.
How they earn the dog’s trust and help it find its place in their town, and how the dog
gets its name, make for a heartwarming story told in two voices using prose and poetry.
Helen Frost
Helen Frost is the author of several books for young people, including Hidden, Diamond Willow, Crossing Stones, The Braid, and Keesha’s House, selected an Honor Book for the Michael L. Printz Award. Helen Frost was born in 1949 in South Dakota, the fifth of ten children. She recalls the summer her family moved from South Dakota to Oregon, traveling in a big trailer and camping in places like the Badlands and Yellowstone. Her father told the family stories before they went to sleep, and Helen would dream about their travels, her family, and their old house. “That’s how I became a writer,” she says. “I didn’t know it at the time, but all those things were accumulating somewhere inside me.” As a child, she loved to travel, think, swim, sing, learn, canoe, write, argue, sew, play the piano, play softball, play with dolls, daydream, read, go fishing, and climb trees. Now, when she sits down to write, her own experiences become the details of her stories. Helen has lived in South Dakota, Oregon, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Scotland, Colorado, Alaska, California, and Indiana. She currently lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with her family.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Adorable book, perfect for grades 1 to 4. It's told in alternating voices by best friends Sam (in poems) and Katie (in prose). The Tracy Twins are the "mean" ones in the neighborhood, but when Sam and Katie make a poor decision, they wonder if they are now the mean ones. It's a wonderful introduction to kindness and judging others that even the youngest reader will understand. I'm a big fan of Helen Frost and I love the way she captured the personalities of an entire neighborhood. Rob Shepperson's art adds to the charm.
