About this audiobook

An engrossing memoir-meets-investigative report that takes a fresh, frank look at how we treat depression

In her early twenties, investigative journalist Anna Mehler Paperny had already landed her dream job. On the surface, her life was great. Nevertheless, she spiraled out, attempted suicide (the first of more attempts to follow), and landed in the ICU and then in a psych ward before setting out to tackle her recovery.

In Hello I Want to Die Please Fix Me, Mehler Paperny turns her journalist's eye on her own experience and others'-in the ward; as an outpatient; facing family, friends, and coworkers; finding the right meds; trying to stay insured and employed. She interviews psychiatrists and other experts to reveal how primitive our methods of healing the brain still are-and provides an invaluable guide to a system struggling, and often failing, to help those in need. At once heartrending and humorous, outraging and serious, this is a must-listen for anyone touched by depression-and that's everyone.

Well written, funny but in-depth depiction of life with depression.

The second part is a bit of a lull because it is all about science and method, everything else is powerful and hard to listen to, but in a good way.

I felt this book deep into my core. As someone who also battles having SIs, it was amazing to read and hear someone else put it out there unfiltered. Often times people tiptoe around suicidal thoughts/attempts and the things that a person is going through. People think it’s like flipping a switch to make those thoughts go away. I laughed…i cried…sometime both at the same time. It was amazing to have someone else valid what I deal with internally, with those around me, and with crazy docs…I can almost sense mine’s finger twitching and read to have me locked in a padded room whenever I meet with her.

I love this book. For those who are giving it negative reviews. You might want to try reading it again later when you have a clearer mind and can embrace what she saying without judgment. She’s giving her perspective of what she’s going through and by judging her…you’re one of the reasons it makes it hard for those who battle this everyday to open up.

By chapter 12, I noticed a sickening pattern emerging…. This title is not what it seems after the first few sections. In fact, It’s excessively wordy and read with such blatant arrogance, holier-than-thou- ivory tower complaining, sarcastic, sneering, I had to shut it off chapter 17.
