About this audiobook

From the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Resistance Reborn comes the “engrossing and vibrant” (Tochi Onyebuchi, author of Riot Baby) first book in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic.

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge
Under the black sun

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.

Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created a “brilliant world that shows the full panoply of human grace and depravity” (Ken Liu, award-winning author of The Grace of Kings). This epic adventure explores the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in this “absolutely tremendous” (S.A. Chakraborty, nationally bestselling author of The City of Brass) and most original series debut of the decade.

Editor's Note

Diverse epic fantasy…

“Trail of Lightning” author Rebecca Roanhorse is back with the first book in her new epic fantasy trilogy, “Between Earth and Sky.” Drawing on indigenous pre-Columbian cultures, Roanhorse mixes in magic, revenge, and adventure as three fierce but flawed characters embark on a collision course during a fateful solar eclipse.

Definitely great writing, but personally it couldn't keep my attention very well. Very confused about which characters were which, throughout the entire novel.

Exciting beginning to an adult fantasy. The setting is inspired by pre-colombian Americas, its very interesting, the story and the world feel fresh and unique. I love the complex on-the-shades-of-grey characters. I think the first half of the book felt a bit slow but then the story has picked up and didn’t let go.
I also love the queernormative world, with trans and queer loud and clear on the page. The audiobook is well done!
Will for sure be keeping up with the series.

It was decent, multiple perspectives and flashbacks sometimes took away from what was happening. Interesting world, interesting characters and cool magic system.

    Black Sun
    by Rebecca Roanhorse

Centered around Pre-Columbian Americas, legends, magic, prophecies, and politics, this story revolves around four characters, Serapio being the MC, as he is the reborn Carrion Crow God.

I listened to the audiobook through Scribd and even though there were different voice actors for the MCs the women sounded a lot alike, and one of the men's voices was too monotone. The story was slow to start and at first hard to follow, and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but the more I listened, the more the story started to take shape.

There wasn't a lot of action, just each character's time spent as the convergence approached, how it would affect them, what they had to do with it and the other characters and I was able to get to know each character, the people around them, and the roles they all play.

Once the story took off, it built up to the climax, and was a cliffhanger. A big one!

I have a lot of guesses about where this series is going.

Although it took me a while to get into it (it is high fantasy so that’s pretty normal) after the first few chapters I was hooked. Beautifully written - I need more now!

This was an interesting ride, this book. Beginning definitely was gripping, the middle was a bit dense, but at a certain point slowly slowly things came together. The couple that was hinted....i want more. I just want more

Good story. The timeline jumping was a bit confusing for me, but the vivid descriptions and modernization of the lives made it easy to understand and relate to, this culture that was completely foreign to me.

Absolutely adored this book. Very Strong cast of characters and voice performances. To be honest I constantly struggle between wanting to binge it and wanting to slowly savor each chapter. Very impatiently waiting for book 2!

This was a decent book. More political intrigue than I expected. Very slow in places. Probably not one I'd read again.

The alternative pronouns are a bit jarring when encountered. Good overall story telling.

This is one of the first books that I've read that had multiple points of view and I had to read this a little slower than I normally read books.

I want to like aspects of the blind representation but upon a closer look the blind main character kind of falls into the "magical disabled persons" trope and I don't like that very much.

"Typically, the disabled characters are limited to four types: the “magical cripple,” the “evil cripple,” the “inspirational cripple” and the “redemptive cripple.” Magical cripples transcend the limitations of the human body and are almost divinelike. They make magical things happen for able-bodied characters."

I really liked Xiala, I like how relatable Serapio was, the queerness, and the addition or introduction of a third gender.

This was a really good read and I can't wait to dig into the next book in the series.

I'm giving this 4.5 stars out of 5

Absolutely fantastic!! The characters are wonderful and it is so refreshing to have a fantasy book that isn't set in a "medieval Europe" type setting. Very imaginative magic use! Can't wait to see what happens next!!

I like the book it has a clean neat story. I don't mind the flashbacks but they were not organized very well and they were random but I can understand that I'm guessing the second novel will tighten this up.
The novel ends on a cliffhanger. The characters are believable and nice their motivations I explain very well and you can see yourself empathizing with them. It is LGBTQ friendly and I don't think there is any cultural misappropriation. It is done tastefully and I can say that the authors attempted the first book is a good one.

I personally did not love this as much as I thought I would. I didn't particularly care for any of the characters and the ending was very rushed.
I loved the diversity but the romance felt very forced
