About this audiobook
Former Sergeant Ryan DeMarco's life has been spent in defiance—he's defied death, loneliness, and betrayal all while fighting the worst parts of humanity. He's earned a break, and following the devastation of their last case, DeMarco and his girlfriend Jayme want nothing more than to live quietly in each other's company. To forget the horrors they've experienced and work on making each other whole again.
But dreams of a peaceful life together are shattered when two bodies are discovered in a smoldering car in the woods, and another is found brutally mutilated nearby. Much as he'd like to leave the case to his former colleagues, dark forces are at play and DeMarco cannot escape the vortex of lies, betrayal, and desperation. He and Jayme are dragged back into the fray, where they must confront the shady dealings of a close-knit rural community.
In the highly-anticipated fourth installment in his critically-acclaimed series, Randall Silvis returns with a case that might break Ryan DeMarco for good.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The overall plot was ok, but the couple in it reminded me of high school couples (ie - the lovey- dove-y stuff was a little sickening), there was a lot of God angst, and the ending was just bizarre - came out of left field and brought the story to a screeching halt. I honestly thought the audio recording was messed up and omitted the last part of the story, but it wasn’t, the story was just done.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Review of Advance Reader’s EditionThe discovery of a horrific scene hidden in the forest brings former Pennsylvania State Troopers Ryan DeMarco and Jayme Matson into an investigation in which they have many theories and little evidence. Will they be able to find the proof they need before someone else falls victim to a crazed killer? Forth in the series, this book stands on its own with sufficient backstory and references to the previous case to keep readers new to the series informed and up to date. The writing is eloquent and well-crafted. The plot takes several unexpected twists as the story slowly unfolds and an underlying tension throughout the telling of the tale keeps readers on edge. The characters are well-developed, nuanced, and believable. Thanks to their continual introspectiveness, Ryan and Jayme have depth and realism, but that same introspectiveness also imparts a substantial heaviness to the telling of the tale. [And why is it that, throughout the book, Ryan is almost always referred to by his last name?]. For fans of the series, this is a must-read book. However, the huge cliffhanger is sure to be a major frustration for most readers.Recommended.
