About this audiobook

Celeste Ng and Liane Moriarty’s enthralling dissection of suburbia meets Shirley Jackson’s creeping dread in this “wickedly funny, unnerving puzzle box of a novel” (Dan Chaon, author of Ill Will) about the downward spiral of a Long Island community after a tragedy exposes its residents’ depths of deception.

Welcome to Maple Street, a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly changing world.

But menace skulks among this exclusive enclave. When the Wilde family arrive, they trigger their neighbors’ worst fears. Dad Arlo’s a gruff has-been rock star with track marks. Mom Gertie’s got a thick Brooklyn accent, with high heels and tube tops to match. Their weird kids cuss like sailors. They don’t fit with the way Maple Street sees itself.

Maple Street’s Queen Bee, Rhea Schroeder—a lonely professor repressing a dark past—initially welcomed Gertie, but relations plummeted during one summer evening, when the new best friends shared too much, too soon. By the time the story opens, the Wildes are outcasts.

As tensions mount, a sinkhole opens in a nearby park, and Rhea’s daughter Shelly falls inside. The search for Shelly brings a shocking accusation against the Wildes. Suddenly, it is one mom’s word against the other’s in a court of public opinion that can end only in blood.

Riveting and ruthless, Good Neighbors is “a chilling, compulsively readable novel that looks toward the future in order to help us understand how we live now” (Kevin Wilson, author of Nothing to See Here).

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. The opinions are entirely my own, and any quotes are taken from the ARC and may be different in the final published copy.

Good Neighbors by Sarah Langan is a difficult book to review in 200 words. There is so much I want to mention but need to limit myself. My review can be summed up in three words "read this book."

Maple Street is a perfect place to raise a family. The neighbors interact with each other as an extended family. They gather for barbeques, help each other, and look out for each other's children.

The new family is different. Arlo, a has-been rock star. Gertie, a beautiful ex-pageant queen. Julie, an intelligent preteen who curses like a sailor. Larry, an autistic boy who, along with his family, does not fit with the Maple Street image. The queen bee, Rhea, takes the family under her wing, and everyone welcomes them into the fold.

After a booze-fueled night, Rhea overshares to Gertie, which starts the Maple Street implosion.

Good Neighbors is a twisted story that takes its time to grow like the heat in summer. I recently read an ok writer cannot mess up a great plot while a great author will take a great plot and make it even better. Langan's writing and the great plot make for an excellent, well-written book.

4.5, I always rate up. It’s an eerily real story in theme, yet the main cast of characters (tweens) have that magical/fanciful feel like the kids in the Goonies. Definitely not YA or a children’s book. But the adult topics are often expressed through the experiences of the tweens. I love the Wild family and many other characters. Way too much language for me. Hits important topics. Insightful. A bit over the top at times, but definitely hits the mark overall. I’d love to read anything this author puts out. Well done!

To be honest this book is pretty dark. The vileness of the characters is juxtaposed with a keeping up the Jones setting. There were a lot of unsettling moments in this book. The plot was pretty entertaining... would give this a five but the ending felt superficial.

The book wasn’t great but this voice actor was super distracting. The character voices switch accent mid sentence at times. Oof.

Nightmarish. A horrifying slip-n-slide through the darkest crevices of an American neighborhood. Brought to life with an animated performance by Nicole Lewis. Recommended!

This was a very unique and disturbing novel and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. I thought there were too many characters and too much going on, but it was engaging and very well written. The audio was excellent!

The book was hard to follow at parts but I wanted to understand what was so mysterious or wrong with the Wild family.
