About this audiobook
Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends—yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.
In this timely audiobook, Carl Trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom—rather than the cause—of the human search for identity. Trueman surveys the past, brings clarity to the present, and gives guidance for the future as Christians navigate the culture in humanity’s ever-changing quest for identity.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The historical background to this generation's sin and corruption. Stay faithful, little children.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I read this book because Ben Shapiro mentioned repeatedly that it is possibly the most important book of the past decade. I will however be forced to reread as it's concepts are abstract and I did find a little bit lacking in comparison. Still , very important topic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent observation and analysis of our modern culture through a biblical lens. This is a must read/listen for all Christians today.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A near-comprehensive volume (at least to me) on the nature of our Western and gradually Westernising world today. It blows the pants off of the stilts that hold our modern world today, whilst simultaneously humbling any who would respond self-righteously to the gradual moral and social degradation of our society by uncovering the reality that we all share in and contribute to said degradation. Ultimately, it’s a powerful work and relevant in any corner of the world for whom Western culture has become an immanent reality, and ultimately points to the cure as a return to the timeless truths of Scripture and the historic and present community that Scripture pedestals — the Church.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great insight into how in the modern time everyone is diverse into gender, race or religion.
The author clearly has a biased perspective, but he does not enforce his perspective. Instead the author describes why the perspective of the left & of false identity has lead us to where we currently are.
Must read. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing book. Well written and researched! I definitely recommend the book!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A spectacularly interesting perspective on the philosophy undergirding a lot of today’s political movements and how we got there. Definitely one you have to pay attention to, but not to dense to grasp either.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely phenomenal. The best Christian text on the topic of the Left and the sexual revolution.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Trueman’s exegesis on the trajectory that the sexual revolution is taking and his delving into people that have influenced the way we see identity is comprehensive and extensive.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I’ll listen again especially to the later chapters. This book opened my eyes to the history and ways of thinking which has lead up to the “social imaginary” of today.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Outstanding book! For those who have the courage. Our world is not what it seems.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of the most thorough yet accessible teachings in the construction of western ideologies I have ever heard!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of those rare and important books that every thinking Christian should read. It’s fairly dense in it’s academic style, but worth listening to several times. Trueman has unpacked the thinking that drives the runaway train of modern Western culture in a way that will equip the Church for generations to come. In showing how expressive individualism provides the basis for modern thinking (including that of most Christians!) he helps us to see a way to make a grounded biblical response. Thank you!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of those books that I may not understand completely now but, in the coming weeks, months, years, the truths exposed in these chapters will continue to illuminate not only what is going on in the world but why it is the way it is. Definitely worth purchasing in the future.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It's hard not to be over-affectionate about this book. It has greatly helped me understand both the society we live in and how we ended up here. It is not a polemic of any sort, though there are some critiques of the logic of modern thinking and living throughout. Although this should all be taken with the major preface in mind that this book is by an academic for academics or those at least interested. It is not accessible to the majority of people who want a google search engine type of answer for the modern west and social imaginary. It is highly historical, philosophical, and navigates the implications that expressive individualism and the therapeutic have on society and ethics. Took me a decent amount of time to get through the first part, but once you get into it, it is impossible to put down. Fascinating, terrifying, encouraging.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dr. Truman provides an historical roadmap from past cultures and major voices into the present status of our world, particularly what many describe as a post-Christian society. His broad treatise calls Christians to hope and to holding a solidly Christ-centered worldview.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If you want to go deeper than What is a Woman? This is your book. It is a fascinating history of how we came to see ourselves as inner minds seeking happiness by expressing our emotions and receiving validation.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was hard to hear because it admits the perverse nature of our current society and self. But it is valuable in understanding that there is a history and cause (I won't say logic) behind current attitudes. It gives a good foundational understanding of why we see these social shifts and could be a good launch point for how the church is to address these times and attitudes.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I found this book, written by a notable scholar of Christianity, philosophy and sociology, immensely helpful. It elaborates in detail, through historical analysis, how we in the West have evolved to a point where marriage, gender and sexual behavior have lost their traditional meaning derived from over two thousand years of Christian cultural values. These former values that used to be embedded in the fabric of society were evidenced in the system of jurisprudence wherein a defendant would swear on the Bible in court. Or evidenced in the words of the Constitution that reference the Christian conception of God. It is interesting to note that there is one world leader who recognizes the degradation and degeneration of Western culture caused by the abandonment of these traditional Christian values. He stated in his address to the Russian people on 24 February 2022 (in relation to Ukraine) that he is not going to allow his country Russia to be destroyed from within by these “false Western values”. It is ironical that - as discussed in this mammoth book by professor Truman - the intellectual influence of Marx, along with Darwin and Nietzsche, was a significant factor in the creation of the current Western atheistic anti-culture of Expressive Individualism and Identity Politics, founded on a postmodern conception of what it means to be human. With the Marxist dream in Russia turning into a nightmare, it appears the leadership is grasping for their former Christian traditional values to avoid going the way of the West - as evidenced by the rise of woke anti-culture in America. This book starts off with Jacques Jean Rousseau in this intellectual journey that gave rise to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s and then the subsequent “LGBTQIA+” ideologies and agendas that dominate the airwaves in the West today. This is a truly great book: it’s plain to see. Truman quotes other authors who have influenced him, and he gives them due credit. I can tell the author is the opposite of a proud & arrogant man, and a true scholar. He might well say, like Isaac Newton: “If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants”
