About this ebook
“Compelling. . . breathtaking. . . unique.” —Washington Post Book World
Meet the Saving Graces, four very different friends who get together once a week to kick back and take shelter from the trials and triumphs of their lives. Emma, the brazen skeptic with a soft heart, is hopelessly in love with a married man. Rudy, the fighter, is desperately trying to hold on to a deeply troubled marriage. Lee, “the normal one,” longs for a baby—and overwhelming desire that threatens to destroy her idyllic marriage. Isabel, divorced and free, is falling for her neighbor, a man whom she is sure is gay.
For the past ten years their unexpected friendship has helped them cope with husbands, lovers, careers, children and everything in between. Though they’ve always been there for each other, when tragedy strikes their love, loyalty, and courage is put to the ultimate test. As this mesmerizing story eloquently captures, men, jobs and crises come and go, but nothing lasts like true friendship.

Reviews for The Saving Graces
10 ratings8 reviews
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is the story of four women who form a women's group in Washington, DC and quickly grow to be close friends. It's not really even clear why they form the group to begin with; they start out discussing "topics" each meeting but soon drop that in favor of just hanging out together. Each of them has a problem, as is common in this type of novel. One has left an unfaithful husband, only to be struck with breast cancer; one has psychological problems and a controlling husband; one is in love with a married man, and both have moral scruples about adultery; and the fourth is infertile. They support each other through all these troubles. The characters are engaging and Gaffney tells the story using multiple points of view (each character "speaks" in turn, chapter by chapter) which is a useful device for this type of story. It was quite enjoyable.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent story of 4 women and their various trials. Well-written, moving, kept my attention thoroughly once I got into it. Recommended it to many people.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really thought that "Beaches" was the best girlfriend book ever written; however, now I've read this book and decided that "Beaches" is a close 2nd.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Four women who are close friends name themselves "The Saving Graces." This book is the story of the struggles they go through and the support they give each other. It is the story of their friendship.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I read this for book club & enjoyed it more than I'd actually expected, thinking it would be more along the lines of chick lit, but I was pleasantly surprised to find more of a serious tone. It also facilitated fairly good discussion, so that was also a plus. I thought the character of Isabel was especially inspiring & enjoyed quite a few of her character's quotes. I could definitely picture a movie being made from this one.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a book about the friendship between four women who form a women's group together, but it is very predictable with no real surprises.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing story of real friendship between 4 women. It's funny and heartwarming. Makes me appreciate my own group of 'Saving Graces'.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5very good book. I didn't like the ending though.
