The Bible is God’s message to you . . . his message of love. That message begins in the book of Genesis with the story of creation—and it continues all the way through the Bible to the book of Revelation and its amazing descriptions of how wonderful heaven will be.

ESTAMENT

The Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament tells the history of God’s people, beginning with the story of creation in Genesis. Here, God tells us how he made us in his own image:

So God created human beings in his image. In the image of God he created them. He created them male and female. Genesis 1:27

From the first moment of creation, God has kept watch over his people—and he still does today! Sometimes they please him, sometimes they sadden him, and sometimes they even anger him, but God always loves his people. Over and over again, throughout the Old Testament, we see God’s faithful love and care—from Abraham to Moses, from Esther to Ruth, and from Daniel to David.

In the New Testament, God shows us just how high and wide and deep and strong his love for us really is. Here, God tells us of his greatest gift—the gift of his Son, Jesus:

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. God gave his Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life. John 3:16

The first four books of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are called the Gospels. They tell about Jesus’ life on earth, of the many lessons he taught and miracles he did, and of how he let himself be sacrificed on the cross so we could one day live with him in heaven.

The rest of the New Testament tells of how the early church began and how it spread throughout the world, carrying Jesus’ message of love and forgiveness everywhere it went.

While the Bible has many stories, we must remember that these aren’t just made-up stories, like Cinderella or Jack and the Beanstalk. These stories are true. They are the real histories of real people and the real things that happened to them. Second Timothy 3:16 tells us that all Scripture is given by God. That means that men wrote down the words of the Bible, but it was God who told them what to write.

God gave us the Bible to help us learn more about him, to teach us how to live better lives, and most of all, to show us how much he loves us.

?

God has one great hope for your life—that you will choose to be his child so that you can be with him in heaven one day.

God knows that you aren’t perfect. You can never be good enough to get to heaven all on your own. That’s why he sent his Son, Jesus:

This is how God showed his love to us: He sent his only Son into the world to give us life through him. . . . God sent his Son to be the way to take away our sins. That is how much God loved us, dear friends! 1 John 4:9–11

So how do you choose to be God’s child? God’s own Word tells us:

Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Acts 2:38

Say a prayer and ask God to show you how to become his child. Your prayer might sound something like this:

Dear God,

I am learning so much about you and how you sent your Son to save me. Thank you for loving me so much. I want to learn to follow Jesus and to be like him in all I say and do. Please show me how.

I know I mess up sometimes—forgive me when I do. And fill my heart with your love, so I can learn to love others as you love me.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

And then try to live your life as a child of God by loving the Lord your God . . . with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind and by loving your neighbor as you love yourself (Luke 10:27). You still won’t be perfect, but you will be forgiven.

Now you are ready to start your great adventure with God. So let’s begin at . . . the beginning, with Genesis 1:1.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth.

Serve the Lord with joy.

Come before him with singing.

Know that the Lord is God.

He made us, and we belong to him.

Come into his city with songs of thanksgiving.

God Creates Light and Space

Genesis 1:1–8

G od is eternal. That means God has no beginning and no end. The universe, our world, and everything in it—even time itself—began when God spoke it into being. Let’s read about God’s amazing creations in the very first book of the Bible, Genesis.

In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. ²The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit was moving over the water.

³Then God said, Let there be light! And there was light. ⁴God saw that the light was good. So he divided the light from the darkness. ⁵God named the light day and the darkness night. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the first day.

⁶Then God said, Let there be something to divide the water in two! ⁷So God made the air to divide the water in two. Some of the water was above the air, and some of the water was below it. 8God named the air sky. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the second day.

God Creates Sea and Sky

Genesis 1:9–19

H ave you ever stood at the edge of the ocean and imagined how deep the water must be? Have you ever wondered if the mountains really do touch the sky? God created this world as a home for every fish that swims, every bird that flies, and every animal that roams. And then God asked us to take care of it all! Let’s read about how God prepared a place for every living creature.

Then God said, Let the water under the sky be gathered together so the dry land will appear. And it happened. ¹⁰God named the dry land earth. He named the water that was gathered together seas. God saw that this was good.

¹¹Then God said, Let the earth produce plants. Some plants will make grain for seeds. Others will make fruit with seeds in it. Every seed will produce more of its own kind of plant. And it happened. ¹²The earth produced plants. Some plants had grain for seeds. The trees made fruit with seeds in it. Each seed grew its own kind of plant. God saw that all this was good. ¹³Evening passed, and morning came. This was the third day.

¹⁴Then God said, Let there be lights in the sky to separate day from night. These lights will be used for signs, seasons, days and years. ¹⁵They will be in the sky to give light to the earth. And it happened.

¹⁶So God made the two large lights. He made the brighter light to rule the day. He made the smaller light to rule the night. He also made the stars. ¹⁷God put all these in the sky to shine on the earth. ¹⁸They are to rule over the day and over the night. He put them there to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that all these things were good. ¹⁹Evening passed, and morning came. This was the fourth day.

: Vegetation means all the plant life on earth. The sky in verse 14 is sometimes called the firmament. This is the enormous area of sky and space where the stars and planets are set. ²

God Creates All Living Creatures

Genesis 1:20–25

W hat’s your favorite animal? Is it a giraffe, an elephant, or a dolphin? On the fifth and sixth days of creation, God made the birds, the fish, and all the other living creatures. Then he put them in the homes he had created just for them, so that the whole world was filled with life!

Then God said, Let the water be filled with living things. And let birds fly in the air above the earth. He created every living thing that moves in the sea. The sea is filled with these living things. Each one produces more of its own kind. God also made every bird that flies. And each bird produces more of its own kind. God saw that this was good. ²²God blessed them and said, Have many young ones and grow in number. Fill the water of the seas, and let the birds grow in number on the earth. ²³Evening passed, and morning came. This was the fifth day.

²⁴Then God said, Let the earth be filled with animals. And let each produce more of its own kind. Let there be tame animals and small crawling animals and wild animals. And let each produce more of its kind. And it happened.

²⁵So God made the wild animals, the tame animals and all the small crawling animals to produce more of their own kind. God saw that this was good.

? The world did not appear by accident. It was by God’s design. The order of creation is proof that God exists. Before creating the birds and fish and animals, God first created homes for them. And before creating people, he made sure we’d have everything we need. What a wonderful God!

God Creates People

Genesis 1:26–31

E ven after all those different animals were created, there was something missing from God’s creation—someone to glorify God and to take care of his creation. So God created the very first man, Adam.

Then God said, Let us make human beings in our image and likeness. And let them rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the tame animals, over all the earth and over all the small crawling animals on the earth.

²⁷So God created human beings in his image. In the image of God he created them. He created them male and female. ²⁸God blessed them and said, Have many children and grow in number. Fill the earth and be its master. Rule over the fish in the sea and over the birds in the sky. Rule over every living thing that moves on the earth.

²⁹God said, Look, I have given you all the plants that have grain for seeds. And I have given you all the trees whose fruits have seeds in them. They will be food for you. ³⁰I have given all the green plants to all the animals to eat. They will be food for every wild animal, every bird of the air and every small crawling animal. And it happened. ³¹God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the sixth day.

Genesis 2:18–24

H ave you ever been to a wedding? The very first wedding was in the garden of Eden, when God made Eve and gave her to Adam to be his wife.

Then the Lord God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is right for him.

¹⁹From the ground God formed every wild animal and every bird in the sky. He brought them to the man so the man could name them. Whatever the man called each living thing, that became its name. ²⁰The man gave names to all the tame animals, to the birds in the sky and to all the wild animals. But Adam did not find a helper that was right for him. ²¹So the Lord God caused the man to sleep very deeply. While the man was asleep, God took one of the ribs from the man’s body. Then God closed the man’s skin at the place where he took the rib. ²²The Lord God used the rib from the man to make a woman. Then the Lord brought the woman to the man.

²³And the man said,

"Now, this is someone whose bones came from my bones.

Her body came from my body.

I will call her ‘woman,’

because she was taken out of man."

²⁴So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife. And the two people will become one body.

That Bad Snake!

Genesis 3:1–15, 23–24

A dam and Eve lived in the beautiful garden of Eden that God had created for their home. God told them they could eat from any tree in the garden—except the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Together, Adam and Eve took care of the garden and all the animals. But one day the evil one, in the form of a snake, ruined it all.

Now the snake was the most clever of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day the snake spoke to the woman. He said, Did God really say that you must not eat fruit from any tree in the garden?

²The woman answered the snake, We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. ³But God told us, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must not even touch it, or you will die.’

⁴But the snake said to the woman, You will not die. ⁵God knows that if you eat the fruit from that tree, you will learn about good and evil. Then you will be like God!

⁶The woman saw that the tree was beautiful. She saw that its fruit was good to eat and that it would make her wise. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of the fruit to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.

⁷Then, it was as if the man’s and the woman’s eyes were opened. They realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made something to cover themselves.

⁸Then they heard the Lord God walking in the garden. This was during the cool part of the day. And the man and his wife hid from the Lord God among the trees in the garden. ⁹But the Lord God called to the man. The Lord said, Where are you?

¹⁰The man answered, I heard you walking in the garden. I was afraid because I was naked. So I hid.

¹¹God said to the man, Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat fruit from that tree? I commanded you not to eat from that tree.

¹²The man said, You gave this woman to me. She gave me fruit from the tree. So I ate it.

¹³Then the Lord God said to the woman, What have you done?

She answered, The snake tricked me. So I ate the fruit.

¹⁴The Lord God said to the snake,

"Because you did this, a curse will be put on you.

You will be cursed more than any tame animal or wild animal.

You will crawl on your stomach,

and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

¹⁵I will make you and the woman enemies to each other.

Your descendants and her descendants will be enemies.

Her child will crush your head.

And you will bite his heel.". . .

²³So the Lord God forced the man out of the garden of Eden. He had to work the ground he was taken from. ²⁴God forced the man out of the garden. Then God put angels on the east side of the garden. He also put a sword of fire there. It flashed around in every direction. This kept people from getting to the tree of life.

Cain and Abel

Genesis 4:2–12

E ven though Adam and Eve had to leave the garden of Eden because of their sin, God was still with them. He blessed them with two sons: Cain, who became a farmer, and Abel, who tended sheep. Like most brothers, Cain and Abel didn’t always get along. In fact, the story of Cain and Abel is also the story of the first murder

Abel took care of sheep. Cain became a farmer.

³Later, Cain brought a gift to God. He brought some food from the ground. ⁴Abel brought the best parts of his best sheep. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift. ⁵But God did not accept Cain and his gift. Cain became very angry and looked unhappy.

⁶The Lord asked Cain, Why are you angry? Why do you look so unhappy? ⁷If you do good, I will accept you. But if you do not do good, sin is ready to attack you. Sin wants you. But you must rule over it.

⁸Cain said to his brother Abel, Let’s go out into the field. So Cain and Abel went into the field. Then Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

⁹Later, the Lord said to Cain, Where is your brother Abel?

Cain answered, I don’t know. Is it my job to take care of my brother?

¹⁰Then the Lord said, What have you done? Your brother’s blood is on the ground. That blood is like a voice that tells me what happened. ¹¹And now you will be cursed in your work with the ground. It is the same ground where your brother’s blood fell. Your hands killed him. ¹²You will work the ground. But it will not grow good crops for you anymore. You will wander around on the earth.

ReaD IT! The tenth commandment tells us not to be jealous or to envy what other people have. Read what God said in Exodus 20:17.

DO IT! Have you ever wanted to take what someone else had? That’s called jealousy or envy. When we are jealous, we forget to be thankful for what we do have. Thank God for something today.

Noah Builds a Boat

Genesis 6:5–8, 10, 13, 17–22

Y ears passed, and the number of people on the earth grew and grew. But the people forgot about God. They stopped worshiping him, and their hearts were filled with evil. Only one man was faithful to God, but God was about to ask him to do something very difficult. Would Noah obey?

The Lord saw that the human beings on the earth were very wicked. He also saw that their thoughts were only about evil all the time. ⁶The Lord was sorry he had made human beings on the earth. His heart was filled with pain. ⁷So the Lord said, I will destroy all human beings that I made on the earth. And I will destroy every animal and everything that crawls on the earth. I will also destroy the birds of the air. This is because I am sorry that I have made them. ⁸But Noah pleased the Lord. . . .

¹⁰Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. . . .

¹³So God said to Noah, People have made the earth full of violence. So I will destroy all people from the earth. . . . ¹⁷I will bring a flood of water on the earth. I will destroy all living things that live under the sky. This includes everything that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will die. ¹⁸But I will make an agreement with you. You, your sons, your wife and your sons’ wives will all go into the boat. ¹⁹Also, you must bring into the boat two of every living thing, male and female. Keep them alive with you. ²⁰There will be two of every kind of bird, animal and crawling thing. They will come to you to be kept alive. ²¹Also gather some of every kind of food. Store it on the boat as food for you and the animals.
