About the Publisher
When she was seven years old, Prissie Pomeroy fell in love with the mailman.
Angels and demons collide over West Edinton, a small town where not everyone is who they seem. In this companion story to the Threshold Series, a divine Messenger becomes one little girl’s prince, and a fledgling Guardian becomes their knight.
CHAPTER 1
Heat shimmered off pavement, and humidity dragged at pearlescent wings. Ethan trailed after the other Guardians, his brown eyes taking little note of their surroundings. Unlike his teammates, the bristle brush-haired angel’s weapon remained sheathed, and his booted feet scuffed the ground. Conrad’s black eyes flashed with sympathy, but Ethan’s mentor didn’t scold him for being lax. He probably should have. The only sign of life on Main Street was the steady drone of multiple air conditioners. Milton County was under a heat advisory, but a few brave souls were out and about, such as Naomi Pomeroy and her brood. The busy mother of five had driven into town for her youngest son’s sake. Zeke drooped listlessly against her shoulder, his blue eyes glazed with fever. The blond toddler was suffering, so his guardian angel was miserable and distracted. And that left Ethan wide open.
Ethan!
barked Conrad, but the warning came too late.
Pain seared across Ethan’s senses as the first dart caught him right above the knee. Barbed bolts fizzed through the air, a rain of blackened thorns. The other angels in the Hedge reacted quickly to locate their attackers.
One atop the gazebo!
roared Othniel, his red whiskers bristling around his face like a mane.
And the clock tower!
warned Trumble, bringing around his double-bladed staff.
Ethan pivoted in time to see one of the enemy detach from the scant, alley shadows beside the newspaper office, but the young warrior was still fumbling for his sword when they collided. Ethan sprawled onto his back, his luminous wings trapped beneath his body.
Too slow,
the Fallen gloated, cracked lips stretching wide, baring the stumps of stained teeth. With an eerie giggle, the attacker closed his withered hands around Ethan’s throat. Madness shone in rheumy eyes as the wretched creature promised, I’ll snuff your light, then snatch your boy and sour his dreams. He shall taste my torment!
God forbid!
the young Guardian rasped, certain that heaven wouldn’t allow it.
His attacker sneered, tightening his hold as he chanted, Fail! Fail! Fail!
Ethan couldn’t breathe as he grappled with his foe. Spots exploded before his eyes, but he would not share in this pitiable creature’s despair. Nor would he lose faith in his companions. He’d served with the other members of this Hedge for long enough to know that help was near.
With a low growl, Taweel plowed into Ethan’s attacker with one burly shoulder, dislodging the enemy before putting him at swordpoint. Behind the shelter of this much more experienced Guardian’s dusky wings, Ethan dragged a ragged breath into aching lungs. Struggling to his knees, he found Trumble at his elbow. The normally soft-spoken
