The Three Great Ships of Isambard Kingdom Brunel

About this ebook
During his career, Isambard Kingdom Brunel built three ships. Each was the largest vessel of their time when launched, and each represented a technological leap forward in ship design.
The SS Great Western was the most conventional. The SS Great Britain was a revolution in ship building, an all-iron ocean-going ship with a propellor screw. The Great Eastern was the largest ship of its time, but too far ahead of its time, and was the project that broke him.
These pieces were originally written for learning packs about historic engineering, and designed as a summary and introduction to the ships.

"History is about stories. I find them fascinating but many books can be very dry, so I try to focus on the story, the people and the challenges. These are written as introductions. Entire books could be (and have been) written on these topics, so if one of my essays piques your interest, there are many more resources out there to tell the whole story with far more detail."
