Michael Anthony's Mental Golf Tips - Michael Anthony

    Acknowledgments

Deepest thanks to the thousands of golfers who have put their trust in me, and have taken The Mental Keys from a theory to a practical reality for achieving success. Special thanks to my mentor, philosopher Edgar Phillips, for sharing his profound insights into the chemical brain with me .

This is in memory of my wife and soul mate, Linda Harper, whose spirit left her body on August 30, 2006. In her younger years, we swam together in the San Francisco Bay. Her spirit was so strong that she made a round trip swim from San Francisco to — and around — Alcatraz Island and back. She was as hard as a rock, yet as gentle as new-fallen snow.

Once, after a hard swim, she told me that, There is always more energy available when you need it. It is advice that I have never forgotten, and it has helped me to keep striving, no matter what challenges I face.

Thanks to my best friend and generous soul, Judi Klosek, who bailed me out countless times during the lean years, when I desperately needed a helping hand to continue on my journey to bring The Mental Keys to you and many others.

Thanks to my buddy, Louanna Leger — another great soul I admire, who refuses to allow her health issues to dampen her spirit.

Thanks to my friend, editor, illustrator, and graphic designer, Thos Chapman, who helped me to polish my wheel and take The Mental Keys book and CD to the next level. Thos’ design and creative talents make him one of the best of the best at what he does.

Thanks to all my friends and spirits that have given me a helping hand along my journey. You are too numerous to mention individually in this short space.

Last, but not least, thanks to my hero, Don Quixote, for continuing to inspire me to keep striving to reach my dreams.

    Introduction

My book, The Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf, gives you all the tools you need to develop a great mental game. My CD, Using The Mental Keys to Polish the Wheel, makes it easy to keep using them. Now, this book in your hands, Michael Anthony’s Mental Golf Tips, will reinforce and enhance your understanding of my unique mental training program.

One of the keys to developing a fantastic mental game is to clearly realize that your mental state affects the chemistry of your brain, which in turn affects your ability to perform. Then, it’s just a matter of reprogramming your tape to optimize your chemistry so you can play at your highest level and in the zone.

This tip book is a collection of 75 mental tips I wrote for my Mental Golf Tip Newsletter between 1999 and 2007. During this time, I received hundreds of emails from golfers who had read The Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf, and/or had listened to the CD. Many of these emails contained glowing reports about the low scores golfers were achieving by using The Mental Keys, and some had personal questions about how to apply The Mental Keys to their game.

Michael Anthony’s Mental Golf Tips will answer most, if not all, of your questions about using The Mental Keys to lower your golf score. Many of these tips may seem repetitive. This is because the same answer applies to most of the frustrations that golfers face during a round of golf.

Once you finally realize that the outcome — or score — is merely a by-product of how well you perform the process, you will start focusing on improving the process, and be well on your way to developing a great mental game. Reading a tip a day will speed up the process.

    Tip 1

    Serving Two Masters

I do a lot of consulting with golfers who desire to lower their scores. Some are preparing to make their mark on the professional tours, some are trying to break 100 and others are somewhere in between.

Even though there is a huge difference in the natural talent and mechanical skills within this wide range of golfers, there is a common denominator that allows me to help all of them. All golfers, including Tiger Woods, experience a certain degree of negative emotions, which adversely affect their brain’s chemistry and performance.

All I have to do to help a golfer shoot lower scores at any level is show them how to reduce their negative emotions and increase their positive emotions. It is almost like magic and works every time if you use these mental keys to train your mind to focus on the process and allow the outcome to take care of itself.

The more you learn to master your emotions, the better you will play at any level. The more you master your mechanics, the lower you will score. It doesn’t get any simpler than that.

In golf, most negative emotions originate from concern of the outcome. The key to controlling your emotions is to realize that you cannot serve two masters and be effective. You can choose to be process oriented, or remain concerned with the outcome.

The only purpose that the outcome has is to give you direction and feedback to make the necessary adjustments to improve your mechanical and mental games. If you train your mind to focus solely on the process of improving, and do the work, it’s only a matter of time until you achieve your desired outcome.

If you insist on serving two masters by being concerned with the outcome while you are trying to improve the process, you greatly diminish your chances for success.

The next time you play a round of golf, stop looking over your shoulder at your score. Instead, play one shot at a time totally in the present. If you do, I guarantee you will end up with a lower score.

    Tip 2

    Friendly Advice

The best tip that I can give you or anyone is not to take The Mental Keys lightly. These keys work by creating awareness similar to peeling an onion. Once you take off the outer skin, there are many layers to be removed before you reach the center of the onion.

This holds true for reaching your center where you will have inner peace and confidence even in the midst of intense competitive situations or any challenge you may face. The first time you read The Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf, you peel off the skin of the onion. The next time you read it, you remove another layer. What is interesting is that each time you read this book, you will find that it reveals another layer for you to remove to reach your center of perfection.

The Mental Keys provide you with a mirror so you can see the flaws in your make-up that are holding you back. The more you read it, the brighter the mirror becomes so you can no longer make excuses or rationalize away your negative behavior and actions if you want to succeed.

My CD, Using The Mental Keys to Polish Your Wheel, makes it even easier for you to keep removing the layers and increase your awareness. Instead of having to keep rereading my book, all you have to do is sit back and listen to the CD before and after you play. However, it helps to keep rereading the book from time to time.

As you get closer to your center using these keys, your performance will get better and better. How good you can become is just a question of how strong your desire is to succeed and how willing you are to do the work required to perfect yourself. The good thing is that the smarter and harder you work, the payback increases and the higher up the ladder of success you climb.

Once your awareness becomes crystal clear as to what works and what doesn’t work, you are prepared to take on your biggest opponent, which is always yourself. So do yourself a major favor and don’t take The Mental Keys lightly because they work if you use them. I guarantee it!

    Tip 3

Fear Cannot Exist in the Present

Many radio talk show hosts that have interviewed me about my book The Mental Keys to Improve Your Golf have commented about my statement that fear cannot exist in the present. They had never looked at fear in that light, but they all acknowledged that the concept makes total sense. If you think about it, I’m sure that you will agree as well.

I have consulted with athletes at all levels in many different sports from Olympic Gold Medalists to low and high handicap golfers. All of them admit that fear is Public Enemy Number One on their list of negative emotions. Since athletes — golfers especially — cannot deny the reality of the mind/body connection, it’s easy for them to realize that the emotion of fear causes their performance to diminish. They also readily acknowledge that when they are performing at their best they are not thinking. They are playing in the present on instinct.

When a golfer experiences fear, he or she is thinking about a future outcome that has not occurred. Fear about a possible negative outcome triggers adverse chemical changes in your brain, which cause your performance to deteriorate. Because of the mind/body connection, fear makes it impossible for you to duplicate the same stroke mechanics that you have when you are relaxed. That’s why many golfers can’t hit the ball as well when they play, as they can when they practice.

By observing your thought processes, you will realize that fear cannot exist in the present. Since you can only physically exist in the present, you only have control of the present. In the present, all one can do is execute at their current level of proficiency. How well you control the present, determines your future outcome — good or bad. It is only when you think about a future outcome that fear can enter the equation and throw off your performance.

The vast majority of individuals have spent their entire lives chasing the outcome. However, you can train your mind to ignore the outcome and stay in the present by focusing on mastering the process. This is a major cultural change for anyone brought up in the Western civilization’s belief system of materialism and winning. Ignoring the outcome is a huge undertaking, but it can be accomplished.

In contrast, the philosophy of Zen is based solely on being the process — Be The Ball. In the Eastern culture, centuries ago, Samurai warriors were highly skilled in the martial arts. To be at their best, they were trained to fight in the present, without fear of death.

Golf is a game! Golf is not a life-or-death situation. So relax and stop worrying about the outcome. Learn to have fun on the golf course and train your mind to stay in the present. If you do, you will have less fear and shoot lower scores.

    Tip 4

    Desire, Belief, and Patience

What do desire, belief, and patience have in common? They are all important ingredients of success in anything that you do or try to accomplish. If you want to shoot lower scores, take an honest look at the above recipe to see what you could be doing better.

Let’s start with desire. How strong is your desire to lower
