About this ebook

Facebook is a collective thought form, generated by its users. Our collective thoughts, (“Posts”, “Likes”, “Comments” and “Shares” ), create a reality that is outside of us and larger than us.

Generally in the West we understand Tao's translation as "The Way". In fact the translation of Tao is much deeper, as explained in the book; "The Tao" is an infinitely large network which influences all thoughts. As such Joe decided to use Taoism in the title to suggest that a new definition beyond the traditional Western is being explored.

The Facebook universe is creating a comprehensive intelligence for your use, find out how in "The Taoism of facebook".

The Italian American community of Federal Hill was Joe's home during his early years. It was there that Joe began his appreciation for extended family, religious values, and good food.

It was during those formative years that Joe also got to experience the close knit community that populated Federal Hill. It wasn't unusual to know your neighbors and storekeepers and expect welcoming grins when venturing outside. It wasn't unusual for neighbors to call themselves, "Pisans", something similar to cousin.
That sense of belonging was a precursor to the Social Media we live with in facebook.

Joe is married, lives in Rhode Island, and has three daughters and two grandsons.
Joe's first book, "Mafia Messiah" is a fun read that opens memory passages of the mind, making each readers experience unique, as they learn a new perspective on the Mafia.

Joe Bagori, born in 1959, to second generation Italian American parents, in Providence Rhode Island. The Italian American community of Federal Hill was his home during his early years. It was there that Joe began his appreciation for extended family, religious values, and good food. It was during those formative years that Joe also got to experience the close knit community that populated Federal Hill. It wasn't unusual to know your neighbors and storekeepers and expect welcoming grins when venturing outside. It wasn't unusual for neighbors to call themselves, "Pizans", something similar to cousin, meaning they came from the province in Italy. Good food and a sense of belonging were not the only old world traditions that Federal Hill embraced. Federal Hill was home to the undisputed leader of New England Organized crime, and he had his office, "The Office", just a few doors down from Joe's home. Power emanated from that office and it influenced the population of not only the neighborhood, but the whole state, the New England region, and was the target of the Federal Bureau of Investigations. The Providence Journal reported spectacular crimes and punishments and invariably attributed them to "The Office". Joe would read these accounts as a paperboy. Joe would ask his mother about those Providence Journal articles and about "The Office" occupant, Raymond Patriarca, and he would be told the Journal was just prejudiced against Italians. Maybe the Providence Journal was reporting facts, and maybe they just did not understand the facts, so Joe was in search of them. As Joe learnt that his Grandfather was good friends with Raymond, Joe thought his mother's comments may have been prejudiced in themselves. In other regards Joe was a typical Baby Boomer and Joe gives a unique perspective of growing up a Boomer in a world were an old world was trying to exist into a future that was born of the space race. Joe's first book, "Mafia Messiah" is a fun read that will open memory passages of your mind making each readers experience unique.

    Conclusion

    Foreword

My morning alarm clock is tuned into our local AM talk radio station. I awake just before the radio alarm is about to go off. I look up at the alarm clock wondering the exact time and the radio clicks to life, static then sound.

I wonder why I woke before the sound of the radio and think that maybe there is news that I need to hear. I turn over, burying my eyes in the pillow, and leave my ears at attention. The call letters of the station are read by the radio announcer. The radio announcer reminds his listeners to friend the station on facebook and to friend him on facebook as well. I think of my cousin, a Disk Jockey on the FM side of the same station, and the fact that she is on facebook, along with her FM station. A radio advertisement plays for an overhead door company, (that’s right the guys that make garage doors), and at the end of the advertisement the radio announcer asks his listeners to friend them on facebook.

I reflect that my children access facebook from both computers and wireless devices. My wife and I love to access facebook to see pictures of the grandkids, and get updates on our family’s daily routines. I have even promised to get my mother and father on facebook so they can get updates on their great grandkids.

I consider the fact that politicians with varying views, we call right and left, post their credos to facebook. I think of the fact that people have started facebook accounts for John F Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe along with a host of other dead celebrities and icons.

That is when it hit me. Facebook is Taoist. The Taoist believes, among many things, that the synthesis of Life and Essence is how we live consciously. Commonly in the West we refer to this as Body and Soul. But the Taoist asks us to take our Body and Soul to another level, by integrating the energies of the collective and maintain a certain suppression of Self. Following the Taoist example requires no special knowledge or learning; it is merely listening to the inner voice, taking note of the current social and environmental patterns and holding to the line of least resistance. The path of least resistance is level and easy but for many the byways are tempting. Byways in the social sense are excessive ambitions and desires that separate people from their inner nature and from each other.

I log into my facebook account with my body and soul, and for all to see, there is some of my essence on my page. In fact I add to the essence with a post and some recent pictures of my family. I check out the garage door company the radio suggested and Like the page. With that Like action all my friends on facebook are informed that I Like this company. At the same time I learn something about the essence of the garage door company and the charity they support.

On my wall there is a message from John F. Kennedy, his body long gone, but his essence living within the community of facebook. A strong and sentimental message with a quote from years ago that is ringing true today. This message has traveled through time to enter my essence, I click the share icon. Now each of my friends knows that I feel this is relevant message for the day. My friends can now share John F. Kennedy’s message on their page. The number of people that may see this Kennedy message is only limited by the number of people in the facebook population. With these actions I have integrated the energies of the collective to tell the story of my essence. I have not relied on my self to get the message out. This is clearly Taoist. As you will see later it is Taoist not only because of the integration of the energy of the collective, but because the message spreads with limited action, or deliberate inaction.

In the following chapters we have quotes from respected members of the Taoist faith. Their words, in deference to their supreme understanding and foundational thoughts, are in bold. I believe you will find in those words an explanation of the power of the Tao, and how it is reflected in social media and facebook in particular. My annotations and insights remain in this font.

For years we in the West have seen a simple translation of the word Tao, (Dao), as The Way. Tao has been routinely presented as a path to follow. The Tao is often presented as that path for a particular situation, or even your entire life journey. In fact defining Tao is well beyond that. The case presented here is that the definition is actually the force that brings men together to decide on a path for their time. In our time that force is facebook.

The practice of Taoism on facebook is basically about discovering who you are, learning to sense the social media community around you and to contemplate your impressions deeply. Facebook accounts should not rely on ideologies but an intuition that should be cultivated as the only way to really know what message of yours the community will share. By having an intuitive understanding of the community you are in a position to predict the actions of others, and to position yourself to achieve your goals.

    Chapter 1

    Taoism describes Facebook

As early as 600 years BC, the Supreme Mysterious and Primordial Emperor, Lao Tzu, or The Old Master, created the foundation Taoism, at some point that foundation was recorded in the Tao Te Ching. Chapter 2 of this book includes the 1891 translation of the Tao Te Ching, by J. Legge, with the author’s annotations of how the 81 precepts relate to Facebook.

Today Taoist philosophy is followed by hundreds of millions of people, and is a powerful influence on modern life. Maybe to the reader’s surprise, I have found that The Old Master, with his Supreme Mysteriousness, while teaching many things in the Tao Te Ching, was also describing Facebook.

Over 2000 years ago some type of ink was set to some type of paper making Chinese symbols recording the Taoist philosophy. In 1905 Lionel Giles made an English translation of those symbols recording in English the sayings of Lao Tzu. Having read these translations they settled in the back of my mind becoming guiding principles in my life.

At the tips of my fingertips is my Facebook account. Family, friends,
