A strategic plan becomes your team’s roadmap for the next one to three years. It clearly articulates what is important to your organization and why. Without a strategic plan, teams, departments, and organizations can float rudderless with no clear direction. Conversely, an organization with a well-communicated strategic plan can focus the efforts of leaders, managers, and employees towards the achievement of specific business objectives. More often than not, those objectives will be reached.

This ebook will provide you, the manager or leader, with relevant, up to date, and practical information on the key components of strategic planning in way that is easy to understand and apply.

  • Tactical Planning involves creating the “tactics” for implementing the strategic plan over a shorter period of time. It is the process of making detailed decisions about what to do, who will do it, and how to do it.

  • Remember, values are beliefs held by individuals in the organization and they provide a framework of expectations or a guide for decision-making.

  • Senior executives are often very clear on the high level activities within the organization but frontline workers or middle managers bring a unique perspective that should not be overlooked in the strate-gic planning process.

  • Strategic Planning is, as mentioned above, the process of developing, defining and articulation the future direction of an organization for the purposes of allocating resources over a longer period of time (1-3 years).

  • Strengths and weaknesses are considered to be of 'internal origin' meaning that they arise from within the organization. Opportunities and threats are of 'external origin' suggesting that these items normally arise externally.
