    This book started out as a series of scribblings to myself; as a way to express and somehow exorcise that relentless, frustrated urging that I sometimes feel on waking, and which I escape from only at night through an exhaustion that enables sleep to close over the same unyielding activity.
    This is for those who similarly have trouble sleeping; who ‘feel the weight of the world’ bearing down on them. It is for those who feel an ambition that reaches beyond the workaday.
    It is not ambition in the narrow sense that it is generally used that keeps one awake thus. It is a more global ambition; it is the desire to lie on the deathbed, look at one’s own past and declare, as King Ozymandias did, “Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!” Yet, this unsleeping ambition is tainted by bitterness. As the subject of Shelley’s poem did, we too will one day be submerged beneath history. Worse, this obscuration will happen only should our works be amongst those rarities that reach any level of renown in our own era at all. For the vast, unrecognised majority of us nothing that comes from us will ever need to be forgotten by the world.
    This book searches for the soul of the individual amidst all this existential chaos and emotion.

    Lucas writes short and long fiction about outsiders, fringe-dwellers and the other. He tries not to self-censor in depicting them. He has no particular genre. He aims to find interesting ways into complex human beings and their crises. Lucas left the Defence Force awhile back. One thing he learned wandering around with a pack on his back is how important it is to fill up that huge expanse inside with what matters. Boredom is a form of loneliness; the product of every thought echoing back unanswered and unexamined. This is one reason why he writes. About my earlier (2012) writings: The World Is Never Enough (2012) represents the early germination of teenage ideas - ideas I hope to build upon and extrapolate over the years to come. With it I was by no means aiming for (the practically unattainable) completeness of ideas, only for thoroughness of thought and for elegance in conveyance, and the chance to relate to a wider audience than the physical sphere of acquaintance. I hope you enjoy it, and find some elements within it that relate to your own life and experience thus far. Notes on Love (2012) grew out of a marriage of personal experience with an awareness of the isolation that individuals feel when it comes to the deeper aspects of love and relationships (whom can you tell? even the deepest friendships have some boundaries on intimacy). Notes on Love is an extension of the T.W.I.N.E worldview; that being a worldview which I intend to constantly hone and evolve.
