    A Personal Story

I stood in the quad at Columbia and watched scores of gown-bedecked graduates with their families at the annual recognition ceremony. Lots of Lion pride was evident, with the soon-to-be officially graduated donning light blue regalia and ear-to-ear grins. I had many reasons to be happy as well. In addition to being a newly minted Columbia MBA, I was about to become a first-time father … to twin girls, nonetheless.

However, while most of the people standing in that quad had new jobs they’d be stepping into shortly after graduation, I was still jobless, albeit with some prospects. I had just finished a final round interview with a firm in the mid-Atlantic a week before, and I felt like it went well enough that I might receive an offer. But I didn’t. I remember getting the disappointing news while standing amongst my fellow graduates, but instead of being in cap and gown, I was wearing a suit because I had to run downtown mid-ceremony for an interview with yet another firm.

You might be asking why, on a day when I should be celebrating a milestone with family and friends, I’d be spending the day interviewing. Simply put, I wanted to become a venture capitalist. And I did. However, it wasn’t an easy journey, and with this book I want to share what I learned during the process to help others
