About the Author:The author, W. D. James, grew up in the backyard slag piles made famous by Harry Chapin but missed out on the bananas by a couple of years, a fact that haunts him to this day.James was educated in public schools and attended Mansfield University but escaped, mere credits short of alumni status, thereby avoiding daily requests for donations, a move that saved hundreds of otherwise-condemned trees from the paper mill. While at Mansfield, James edited the school newspaper and was a voice of mellow relaxation on the campus radio station. Listeners, both of them, said he was “a DJ, I think. Right?”James worked in many jobs, from dishwasher to vice president of a dysfunctional supply company to his current position as professional mediator, social worker, confidant and general target of the public’s anger, aka: a police officer.James resides with his wife, Margie and daughters Miranda and Sunshine (Margie is a proud hippie- guess who named the child). A black lab, Damnit, rounds out the family. While the James family lives in a dachau on the river Dungh, James can often be found taking the occasional sanity break in the great Pacific Northwest and attending painful reunions in the not-so-great northeast.James prefers not to write his own biographies but begrudgingly offered this copy when warned by his editor that no royalties would be paid without a completed book. With that bit of knowledge, copy was quickly produced.James is currently working on a sequel to “In Another Life,” to be released after Damnit learns not to eat flash drives and power cords and the vet retrieves chapters six to twelve from the latest stool sample. It may be a while.

Drop a Dime
Romeo 10, clear the stop. Back in.
Copy Romeo 10. 2152 hrs.
I sat in my cruiser at the corner of Main and Gespenst Streets, finishing up notes on my shift report. It was a cool, early fall Thursday night and traffic was sparse. I was looking for action and the sheep were not cooperating.
The wolves, they were apparently in their dens, conjuring up their next capers.
My name is Roger Mackay, and I’m a rookie police officer. I’ve been on the job for about five months. Actually, it’s been a while longer but that’s in another life, and another story.
I dug out my stopwatch and got ready to watch the Vascar lines painted on the road, when I saw a man approaching my car. Instantly on alert I turned the inside light out and put my hand on my weapon.
Officer? Officer, sorry to bother you,
the man said. I just wanted to thank you for being here. The cars slow down now. Main’s not a drag track!
I had been hitting traffic hard the last few days, trying to make points with my boss, Sergeant Palmer. Palmer was a big guy, about six-five, built like a tank and he had a surprisingly short temper. Nobody screwed with Tank, the nickname that nobody called him to his face.
Thanks,
I said. I just want to make sure the public is safe.
And keep your Sergeant off your ass?
Ah, yeah, that’s a given,
I said, wondering if that was always the case or did this guy know something?
I’m Ted Seeley. I live around the block. Hey, you look like a guy who could use a tip. In about ten minutes or so, a white car will come by. You should have a reason to pull it over. Go for a consent search. You won’t be sorry.
