    To clarify the context of this memoir, inflammatory bowel diseases are among the most serious health conditions known. They usually require the patient to undergo great private suffering and years of trial and error, with faint hope for a permanent, non-surgical cure. Fecal therapy isn’t something we’d run to for recurrent dandruff, say, but intractable bowel disease, with its severity and lack of other viable options, presents fundamentally unique cost-benefit considerations.

    The rational basis for fecal therapy is not controversial. But the treatment carries a social stigma, especially when done at home, and the methods for accomplishing home treatment are often difficult to act upon. Our experience with ulcerative colitis has forced us to find ways to close the esthetic and logistical gaps, and we have found it worth the time and trouble to do so.

    Fecal therapy is the only treatment option for UC currently known that offers even a slight hope of reversing the disease process, and returning the patient to a pre-disease state, with no further need for drugs or 180-degree lifestyle changes.
