About this ebook
The comet Nefarious is on a collision course with Earth. Apparently. And the US is scrambling to stop it.
But Tamas, a seasoned journalist in the Eastern world, discovers that there may be an ulterior motive for putting a huge arsenal of weapons into space.
His information suggests that the comet may not be on a dead-eye collision course at all, and that the general public might be falling for a very calculated ploy.

Nicholas Sheffield grew up in Hamilton, New Zealand. He obtained a Bachelor of Management Studies from the University of Waikato, and has a long history of work in the Information Systems sector. He and his wife Simone have six children. Double Dragon published his first work, Overlanders, in 2004. The novel revolves around a group of friends whose utopian existence is put at risk when they’re thrust into the archaic and dangerous cities of the overlands. Sheffield’s writings are generally set in, or around, the Earth, and employ a plausible use of technology. Therefore many of the popular science fiction themes, such as time travel and alternative dimensions, never appear in his works. The concepts that form the spine of each story are often as important as the main narrative. They’re not always held up to the spotlight, but tend to be woven quietly into the background.

Chapter 1
The president stood in front of the assembly with her hands clasped in front of her, watching the big red numbers counting down on the display panel that was hung high on the back wall. She hardly needed to look at them because the volume of camera flashes made by the hundreds of impatient journalists gave her a good indication of what the time was.
She cut a venerable figure. There was an air about her that looked distinguished and urbane, whilst still possessing the unyielding grit and determination of the bourgeoisie. Some of it was no doubt her well-trained poise and neatly styled clothing, but much of it had to be accredited to her hair. Her magician of a hairdresser had somehow managed to find a hue of grey that at once looked like honest and soft, and at the same time dashing and youthful. The blow-drying applied to it was perfection.
She stood very still, only glancing once or twice around the room to make eye contact with people she knew. It wasn’t an easy thing to do because the intensely bright spotlights were pointing at her from six directions, which was blinding for the eyes.
Her face was glistening with droplets of sweat – caused partly by those hot lights, partly by the three-piece woollen suit she was wearing, partly by the anxiety that even a brave leader couldn’t suppress. The sweat didn’t quite get to the point of forming drips but it wasn’t far off.
Finally the last few seconds counted down. It was time for the broadcast. She licked her dry lips quickly and then opened her mouth to speak in her stately, articulate manner. Her aging voice carried an air of gravity that commanded total silence in the hall.
‘Good evening.
‘I am here to speak to you today about the Comet Nefarius. As you probably have heard by now, this comet is on a collision course with our planet. It is an extremely colossal body of rock and ice, some several hundred square kilometres in size.
‘And so it is a dire assessment that I must present to you today. This is an unprecedented natural disaster looming, of the most unimaginable scale.
‘If Nefarius strikes us directly, which our scientists believe is more than likely, it will obliterate this wonderful Eden. The comet is of such a magnitude that the chances of a single human soul surviving the aftermath are minuscule. It will likely destroy the atmosphere with a shock wave so large that it will wipe every last species out of existence. The great civilisation that our forefathers built up, over so many incredible millennia, will be gone in one horrific flash.
‘The stakes couldn’t be any higher. Never before has humankind faced such a cataclysmic event. Never before have we been threatened with total annihilation. The great wars of yesteryear pale in comparison to the scale of devastation we must bring ourselves to imagine.
This comet must be stopped. We must do everything it takes.
And we will. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we will. The United States of America has reached out its hand to all the countries of the world in order to form a cooperative alliance against this menace. We have unanimously agreed to pool our resources together and defend this magnificent oasis we call Earth against the merciless danger that descends upon us.
The leaders of the world have accepted our hand. They have specifically requested that the United States of America, along with its stalwart allies, launch whatever arsenal is required to alter the
