Ellen Vincent

Ellen Vincent was brought up in Ghana but now lives in the UK. She is interested in all things that are natural. Ellen has noticed that many of the cosmetics and treatments that are available in the West contain lots of artificial ingredients and are often based on oils and substances made from petro-chemicals. After comparing them with the kinds of things that she used in Ghana she has found that the petro-chemical based ones can cause irritations and bad reactions as well as not being as good as natural based products. She now extensively makes her own cosmetics and only uses the best natural ingredients that she can find.Back in the old country coconut oil use is widespread and is used in cooking as well as to make body creams. She uses virgin coconut oil to cook with and uses it as the base for many of her skin and hair creams and oils. Ellen now produces a range of natural cosmetics that she sells in her local area in the UK under the name of 'Natural Revelations'. She hopes that she will be able to introduce these to Ghana at some stage together with all of the books that she has written on natural healthy living.Dealing with the outside of your body is fine but, to make the most of the creams and oils that you apply, you need to make sure that the foods that you eat are also doing their job. She is a big fan of green smoothies and makes sure that she has these every day. She feels invigorated after drinking them. You should look out for Ellen's books on green smoothies which include a volume that just contains ideas for recipes. She has built up her vast collection of green smoothie recipes by experimentation and following good practice. In the UK she came across apple cider vinegar and has found that this too is very useful when it comes to treating your skin and keeping your body healthy. She was so amazed by the many uses that can be found for apple cider vinegar that she wrote a book all about it. This too will soon be available through Smashwords. If you want to find out about how using a range of natural ingredients can be so good for your body and health, then you really should read Ellen's books. These are available in both electronic formats and as paperbacks. She is hoping to produce a book specifically for the care of Black hair and skin and as a result you should watch out for this when it is actually published in the near future.

    About the Author

    Introduction

    Coconuts on a palm tree

To most of us coconuts and coconut trees are exotic things that we only seem to come into contact with when we are on holiday. However, coconut foods and products are exported across the world these days and you will find them at your local market, supermarket and local health food shops. I even bought a fresh coconut, with the green husk still on, from our local market just the other day.

    Palm leaves used for construction

People in African countries certainly know the value of the coconut tree and when I visit Ghana I see that coconut leaves are used for roof coverings, the husks are used to make mats and the shells are used for making bowls. Fresh coconut water is used as a refreshing drink in Ghana and is found on most street corners. The seller just chops off the end with his cutlass and away you go. I noticed last week that our health food shop had cartons of coconut water and were advertising the refreshing and health giving values of the drink. In addition to this, creamed coconut made from the fleshy inside of the coconut, has been used for centuries in traditional Asian and Indian cuisine.

There has been a great interest in the health benefits of coconut oil and this has lead to its addition to many creams and other beauty products. There are also many recipes that it has been added to, in order to supply its health giving properties to the body. The oil is therefore often used as a substitute for other oils that have proved to be less healthy for the body.

Despite all of the excited activity surrounding coconut oil there is still a lot of confusion as to whether health claims for coconut oil have been blown out of proportion. Added to this is the fact that based on all of the things we are usually told about oils, coconut oil shouldn’t be in the list of healthy ones. This book explores the evidence related to the health claims about coconut oil and tries to explain why, despite all of the usual advice about oils, fats and diet, coconut should still be considered as a valuable tool in keeping our bodies healthy. In doing this we have to separate the myth from reality and try to think about oils and fats in a totally new way.
