Prologue
Fannie found the note as she was cleaning Dana’s house in early March in anticipation of her return to Solitude. Dana had torn the ACL in her knee playing tennis over the Christmas holidays when she was in Florida with her husband Larry and his daughter’s family. Dana and Larry had planned to leave the country in January for a mission trip to the Philippines. Larry went alone while Dana had surgery and rehab in Naples. She’d gotten much closer to Larry’s daughter and her two children in the process. Sadly Dana also witnessed the demise of Loren’s marriage.
The note Fannie discovered was neatly folded and addressed to Dana and stuffed inside the pillow case where Dana’s brother Phil had been hiding out in the attic of the Victorian style house in the small village of Solitude before Christmas.
Fannie surmised that Phil wanted the note to be found by Dana eventually but not until after some time had passed. He hadn’t likely considered that she would be scouring through the home from basement to attic in Dana’s absence. Phil likely wanted to be well ensconced in the witness protection program before the note was discovered. He knew he had little time left to live, but had not revealed that to anyone close to him. He never wanted their pity. He also didn’t want his overly curious sister and daughter wasting their time trying to find a dead man.
Chapter 1
Fannie rushed down two flights of stairs to find Dana’s cell phone number and share the news about the note. She hoped it wouldn’t go to voice mail. She needed to speak directly with her childhood friend.
Dana, it’s me. I was laundering linens and decided to see what Phil had left in your attic. I found a note addressed to you. Do you want me to send it?
No, no. Go ahead and read it to me. There isn’t anything that we can’t share. It’s not like I’ll likely ever see him again. I’ve been pretty down about the whole witness protection business.
Fannie pushed a strand of hair under her prayer bonnet, took a deep breath, and then opened the note.
"Dear Dana,
I wasn’t completely honest with you when we met up recently. I’m afraid that my cancer has spread and that I have less than a month to live. But I didn’t want you and Carly trying to find me or picturing me starting a new life. I’m glad that we were able to reestablish a good relationship. Let my kids, especially Carly, know that they were the best things in my life and that I so regret some of the mistakes I have made. Try to focus on the good memories that we shared. I know that’s what gets me through the day.
