Broadcast Journalism Pocket Checklist - Randy Tatano
INTRODUCTION
Let's face it, there's nothing more annoying than wrapping up your day, looking back at your work, and saying to yourself, I forgot something.
As a reporter, you may have forgotten to do a standup or get a key piece of b-roll or used a great piece of nat sound. As an anchor, you may not have explained a story as well as you could or missed a great lead-in that would have been perfect. As a producer, you might have stacked your show in such a way that it didn't flow very well, missed an important story, or forgot to ask the photogs for money shots to open your newscast.
With television news changing so rapidly, it's impossible to remember everything. Twenty years ago you put a product on the air and that was it. Now you have to deal with the station website, Facebook, Twitter, extra live shots, longer shifts, and possibly shooting your own story. Or two. You're pulled in so many different directions and have so many duties it's natural that some things will fall through the cracks.
And sadly, those things that are missed are often the most important.
Hence, the pocket checklist.
This being the digital age, of course, means the thing in your pocket or purse is probably a cell phone. So this is an electronic checklist. It will never get dog-eared from sitting in your back pocket, never get coffee stains on it, never be forgotten back at the station or your home. Let's face it, when was the last time you forgot
