Linda Rae Blair

Raleigh artist, Linda Rae Blair was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. She has used her knowledge gained during extensive travel throughout the United States and her passion for art, history, mysteries, and scenery to create compact novels with rich characters so real you'll miss them when they're gone and places you'll swear you've been. She has lived in Seattle, WA, Monterey Bay, CA, Cincinnati, OH, and retired five years ago in the Raleigh, NC area. Her love of history is well-earned. She is a direct descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of Mayflower fame. She is also descended from a strong line of Scots-Irish immigrants to America in the 1700s. She even had a great uncle who was robbed by the infamous outlaw Belle Starr. Her Scottish love story, “Elusive”, spans 200 years of Scottish history and intrigue via setting in 1700s Scotland and early 1900s Paris and Scotland. An avid reader who inhales novels by Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown and others in the romance/mystery genres, her imagination takes you to a variety of places and times all in the same story. Her travels to the beautiful southwestern states inspired her more modern historic romance combined with mystery, “100 Years of Brotherly Love”.Her mystery series, The Preston Andrews Mysteries now has 12 published entries, beginning with “Hard Press’d” which now claims over 50,000 downloads and, most recently, the softcover print version of the series in compilation form.Ms. Blair has spent many happy hours in Virginia Beach during off-season, when the winds blow cold and hard and the salty air whips at the weather-protected palms. This is the locale chosen for her Preston Andrews series. Locals and visitors alike find many familiar frames of reference in this series. Her homage to her love for Poirot is via her teeny tiny mystery, “The Board Game Murders”.Her newest series is aimed at a slightly younger and more female audience from that of The Preston Andrews series but begins in the backstory in “Pressing Reunion”.The Samantha Hartley, PI series is lighter and features a very young and not terribly experienced private investigator just beginning her career—with a slight assist from the Director of the FBI.One thing is for certain, she combines her passions into stories interesting to history buffs, travelers, and lovers of romance and mystery.

    Chapter 1

    Booker Building

    221B Barker St.

    Washington, DC

Sam sat in front of her office window looking out toward DC in the spring she loved while pondering her favorite client’s situation. Swiveling back and forth slightly, causing the old refurbished chair to squeak pleasantly as far as Sam was concerned, she mulled over what she knew for certain.

Mrs. Hyman, Sylvia, had good-for-nothing husband, Herman, who had been cheating on her for years and years. While Sylvia was a pleasant looking, if matronly, older Jewish woman with long brown silver-streaked hair pulled up in an enormous swirl of hair at the back of her head, Herman could not be as favorably described. He was small, skinny, balding, wore wire-framed glasses and dressed like an old frump. Hell, he is an old frump! What do all these women see in him, anyway?

They were wealthy by any person’s standards—except for Sam’s friends, the Andrews, and perhaps dear Jack. Jack was her friend’s father. Jack was extremely well off—and thanks to his late son, so was Sam, although she thought about that as little as possible. To dwell on the money was to allow the pain of how it came to her enter her heart and mind again. She’d put a lot of effort and time into recovery and didn’t want to reopen those old wounds.

Sylvia was in no big hurry to catch Herman at it and get a divorce. She’d waited patiently while Sam had been tied up on Jason’s murder case. Even now, months later, all she did was review the reports Sam wrote up, leaving them safely in Sam’s possession.

One thing that Sam knew without any doubt whatsoever, Sylvia Hyman was a smart cookie and she was up to something. Sam earnestly hoped whatever it was, was legal! She shook her head the clear the mental picture of dear old lecherous Herman bent over a desk getting just what he deserved.

Sylvia was a dear woman and deserved so much better.

    Chapter 2

    Booker Building

    221B Barker St.

    Washington, DC

The knock on the door startled her. Sam swiveled the chair toward the old and scarred desk. The door opened and the smiling face of Brian Newland, DC Homicide’s cutest detective—in her opinion at least—and sunshine in her life since they’d worked together on Jason’s murder case.

Brian’s big brown eyes were twinkling with mischief. Hey, pretty lady. You busy?

No, not for you. What’s up, Newland? she laughed.

He stepped into the office, closed the door behind him, faced her and put his hands into his pockets. Looking just a little smug, he said, I thought I’d stop by and take you to lunch. That is, if you have time to get away for a few minutes.

She knew that he knew her business was still growing and slow at times, so she enjoyed his tender way around the subject.

Oh, I’d… the entrance of a young woman entering quickly and closing the door behind her stopped her cold.

Tall, slim, flawless skin of the milk chocolate tone, huge black eyes with lashes that would make any other woman weep, this new visitor had that air of money. Nothing obvious or showy, mind you. No, this was that very subtle carriage of assurance that came with money—old money.

Sam noticed the look exchanged between the woman and Brian Newland. The woman looked trapped; Brian looked surprised.

Ms. Watkins, Brian said, his voice reflecting the surprise on his face. Sam, this is Valerie Watkins. I met her recently and recommended you to her.

Sam noticed his growing discomfort, so she stood and walked around her desk to greet her new visitor. Welcome, Ms. Watkins. Please have a seat.

"What is he doing here?" Sam’s new visitor asked.

Sam also noticed that Ms. Watkins was not pleased to find Brian here. Detective Newland was just leaving. Turning slightly toward Brian, she said, I’ll be in touch with you later this afternoon on that matter we were discussing. I should have some results by then.

Sam could see that he took her hint as he excused himself and left the office as quickly as he could without it appearing
