Although many did not know the name of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Cardinal from Argentina, as he was not predicted to be the new pope by any of the analysts or even administrators of the church, the world quickly began to praise him for his extremely humble attitude and straightforward manner. News headlines exploded with information about the first non-European and first Jesuit pope in the history of the church, and Latin Americans rejoiced at finally having significant representation in the church hierarchy.

      Succeeding the previous Pope Benedict XVI at seventy six years old, Bergoglio steps up to the plate at a tumultuous time in history of the Catholic Church. He is the new leader of a church that has been plagued by a decreasing number of priests as well as members, numerous sex scandals, and calls for reform. His election comes as such a surprise because many believed that the conclave would choose a young, vibrant cardinal to help bring new life into the church. While he is no longer young, Bergoglio is not against changing the traditions of Catholic Church and is already notable for bringing many new firsts into the papacy.

      A man of humble beginnings, Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the descendant of an Italian immigrant family. Extremely intelligent, academic and spiritual, with strong traditional values, he decided to join the church at a young age. His early life and experiences have shaped Bergoglio’s views about poverty and gave him a great respect for the working class and the unemployed. These views have defined his entire life’s work and will follow him as his new status as pope is cemented and he begins to have more and more influence in the Catholic Church.

      Even though he is now one of the most powerful religious figures in the world, the new Pope Francis still acts as if he is just like everybody else and perhaps that is part of his charm. He speaks simply and in a conversational manner, purposefully avoids the luxurious housing, dress and manner of the Vatican and uses social media such as Twitter. Somewhat shy and with a dry sense of humor, Bergoglio enjoys reading the newspaper and listening to classical music on the radio. As a young man, he loved to tango, and the newspapers were quick to point out his lifelong passion for soccer, and ongoing support of the San Lorenzo soccer club.
