About this ebook
The human body as presented in this pillar based on the view of traditional Oriental medicine is of great benefit. It provides knowledge on the functional activities of the internal organs, their relationship to one another and their relationship to the five sense organs. Also explained are the functions of the muscle system, the meridian network, the main energy centres, as well as the formation, transformation and distribution of the three essential substances, which are energy, blood and nutritional fluids. Tables and figures are used to illustrate points.

Who am I in my Physical Body? (return to Contents)
Up until now, little to no mention has been made of the gross body as the first and second pillars, Reality and the Truth and The Path of Transformation respectively, focused on the study of the most subtle aspect of our being, the mind, which includes the lower mind, intellect, ego and Mahat Mind. So, in this pillar, we explain the physical body from an Oriental medicine perspective. (Please note, although Pillar One and Two are mentioned above, they are not required reading for this pillar. However, familiarity with Pillar One in particular would be beneficial as it is referred few times throughout the text that follows).
Although modern anatomy and physiology have contributed a great deal to modern medical science, they are not sufficient enough to deal with the health problems of the day. The health issues of a living human are too complicated to be solved with the materialistic theories of modern science, which are mostly based on the Darwinian theory of evolution and Descartes’ theory of classical physics that eventually led to the reductionist-mechanistic view of the universe. As a result, modern anatomy and physiology do not explain human life as one interrelated system whose welfare is tied to the interrelationship among all parts of the body as a whole. Instead, its study of the human body is fundamentally of a material nature, and it looks at the human body as a machine which can be taken apart and fixed independently of the rest.
This is because, although science means knowledge, modern science has been preoccupied mostly on intellectual information, which is a property of the lower mind (manas) and influenced by the ego. It is, consequently, based on the desire of the five senses in relation to the five gross elements with the purpose of attaining pleasure, power, money and fame. True knowledge, though, is the information that has been filtered by the Mahat Mind and is validated by the true self to become a part of our unbiased wisdom. Unlike most of the intellectual so-called scientific information, true knowledge hardly fails nor does it ever produce any harmful fruits of action. We refer, for example, to the valid understanding of the aspects of our subtle body as true knowledge.
In this pillar, we introduce a system as vital, if not more, to a person’s life as the nervous system, and yet, little is known about it by modern science, including the Western medical system. This is because this system works as a principle and does not have particular cells or tissues, so it is hard for intellectual scientists to identify let alone understand. This system, however, does possess pathways (meridians and collaterals) in which the three essential substances of energy, blood and body fluids are transported. We refer to this system as the energetics system of the body. It connects all and every part of the body together and harmonizes the functional activities of all the other systems (including the internal organs and the nervous system) so that they work together as an integrated
