About this ebook

Professor Jimmy Abbey weighs decorum and desire as he dreams of conquest both with a hotel maid, and Circe -- the conference's hot, young "it" girl. Is Jimmy truly any different than his competing cohorts? Will he ever get his chance to get Circe alone? Or will the emotional baggage of potential infidelity actually be enough to save his "lost" soul? In "The Sun Also Rises in the Desert," Locklin showcases the simple human strengths and weaknesses of characters in a way that is profoundly compassionate.

A legend in the small press and beyond, Gerald Locklin is now a Professor Emeritus of English at California State University, Long Beach, where he taught from 1965 through 2007 and still teaches an occasional class. He is the author of over 150 books, chapbooks, and broadsides of poetry, fiction, and criticism, with over four thousand poems, stories, articles, reviews and interviews in periodicals. His monolithic body of work spans a half century, and Mendicant Bookworks is proud to introduce a brand new reading generation to his work.

    Part I

As Jimmy Abbey hauls a loose suitcase of books down the corridor of the conference

hotel, a maid rushes past him with a smiling. Let me open your door for you, Sir.

Thanks, but I think I can get it.

No, let me, please; it’s easier.

    Well, thank you very much.

No problem. I just finished making up your room. Does everything look right to you?

    Everything looks great.

I turned on the air conditioning for you...and for myself, she laughs, while I was working.

It’s going to be a hot one all right.

Good pool weather. Do you swim?

Yes, almost every day, but not very well.

You have a beautiful view of the pool.

    So I see.

My name is... But it’s Mexican, and in spite of her excellent English, Jimmy doesn’t catch it.

Jimmy, he says, and figures he will catch hers later.

If there’s anything you need, just let me know, okay?

    Right.

If you need anything tomorrow morning, just tell me, okay?

    I’ll do that.

Then I hope you have a wonderful stay with us.

    I’m sure I will.

I’d better get back to my work.

    Of course.

    + + + + +

He has to go back to the car, though, for a couple more bags, one large with clothes, one swollen with assorted snacks and Diet Pepsis and other things tossed in at the last minute. Sure enough, the maid comes rushing from another corner to open the door for him: Here, let me get that for you.

    Thank you.

You brought all that on the plane?

    No, I drove.

    A rental car?

"No, my own little Focus. I have a son who’s a fireman in Phoenix so I drove over from Long Beach and stayed a couple of days with him and his wife.
