    About the Author

    Introduction

In the main the Fender Stratocaster guitar is just the same as any other electric guitar and setting it up involves the same kinds of skills. The hardware maybe slightly different but all the parts are recognizable as standard guitar parts such as the bridge, nut and machine heads. As a result this book covers all the setup details of guitars in general with the important extra bits that you need in order to get your Stratocaster really humming.

When using this book you should note that there is a particular order to the things that you set up. If you change the order you may find that you will have to go back and redo some of the tasks because you have changed things once again. The final thing that you should do is set up the guitar intonation. This is because changing the gauge of strings, adjusting the action and setting the truss rod could all change the intonation settings. If you are simply changing your strings for the same gauge as you were previously using there shouldn’t be a need to do any further adjustments as the existing settings should be just right.

The book starts with sections on tuning and solving tuning problems because you need a guitar that stays in tune in order to do further set up tasks on it. The book assumes that you will have an electronic guitar tuner. This will allow you to make precise settings which will improve the overall performance and sound of the guitar. If you have a good sense of pitch then you can, of course, use your ears. Without an electronic tuner you can tackle all of the set up tasks apart from the setting of intonation which requires more accurate settings.

You need to really know what you want to achieve before you start changing things on your guitar. If you are a complete beginner, at playing the guitar, it probably isn’t a good idea for you to start changing the settings on your instrument. You should therefore get a professional or more experienced guitarist to look at any problems that you have until you know exactly what you want.

You don’t have to read the book right of the way through. You can simply dip in and out and pick out the part that you want to focus on. However, please remember as stated before that changes that you make may
