Disneyland Paris - History Files
Even if Disneyland Paris does not spread its past in history books, even if it is not a former towering fortress, even if its main characters fought not with armies, but with dragons and witches, its history fascinates and reveals how the story of a fairytale was born. Disneyland is more than a park; it is a city of childhood, concealed from any trace of maturation, wrinkles and sad eyes.
Its story did not start BC and under no circumstance due to a nomadic tribe. It was all started by a mouse
, said Walt Disney himself. It wasn’t just a mouse, but Mickey Mouse itself. The founder of the never ending childhood and the immortal smiles, Mickey Mouse rushed
into the children's world and conquered it without any chance of deliverance from the yoke
fun.
Initially, it chose to establish its headquarters in Anaheim, California, opening its doors to visitors on July 17, 1955, to gladden all those souls who dared to cross its threshold. Walt Disney's great dream was to create a park that would amaze both children and adults. He decided to set up the first Disney park on the land located across his studio in Burbank, but his plans were too grand to fit there.
As a result, Disney decided to let the people at Stanford Research Institute find a suitable location for the funfair. They suggested the Anaheim area location that at that time had been divided into several lots, each belonging to a different owner. In order to purchase 64 acres from 17 owners, Disney was forced to sell his holiday home and take many loans. These sacrifices were made to give life to the most colorful and cheerful holiday destination.
At the park opening ceremony, Disney pronounced, like a soothsayer, some of the most beautiful words that can describe this land of fairytale: Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to expand as long as there is imagination.
At the opening, the park in Anaheim welcomed its visitors with 20 attractions, rapidly increasing the offer to faithfully follow Disney’s forecast.
Unfortunately, the expansion in that area wasn’t possible after all because the owners of the other lots decided to raise hotels and restaurants instead, to take advantage of the funfair fame; consequently, they didn’t sell to Disney the necessary land for expanding.
Acknowledging his mistake of purchasing a land too small for his project, Disney decided to secretly buy 121 square miles in Florida, laying the foundation for the Walt Disney World Park.
Due to the success enjoyed in America, Mickey Mouse decided to conquer Europe, to further spread his empire of joy. The plans for the construction of an European park took shape around 1975, nine years after the legendary Walt Disney had passed away. The options of building a park in either England, Italy, Spain or France were taken into consideration, but the first two countries quickly came out from the race because of the lack of a large, flat territory. Spain was among the favorites due to its similar climate to Florida, but the unrelenting mistral represented an obvious obstacle.
Finally, Marne-la-Vallée became the winning location and the main reason behind this decision was its proximity to Paris: the 32 km long distance can be covered in a magical moment (the equivalent of 35 minutes) by RER A line 4. The location’s central position in the Western Europe makes it easily accessible to an impressive number of visitors, being at about 4 hours of traveling distance by car to 68 million people and 2 hours of flight for another 300 million. Hundreds of millions of people who have to discover the magic of Disney!
In December of 1985, Michael Eisner signed the first agreement with the French government to start the work on the funfair that would initially be known as Euro Disney. The forerunner contracts were signed the following spring, and Robert Fitzpatrick, a former organizer of the Olympic Games in 1984 in Los Angeles, became President of Euro Disney.
The park’s construction began in August 1988, and it spread over an area of 2,000 hectares. Two years later, in December, Espace Euro Disney
– an info center - was opened to familiarize the public with what was being prepared in the magical world of Mickey Mouse with European citizenship. The staff that would give life to the funfair was recruited in September, thus hundreds of people had the chance to become residents
of the Disney fairy tales.
Mickey Mouse opened the European park to its employees in March of 1992, thus welcoming the first guests in April. Unfortunately, it started off on the wrong foot. Organizers estimated that the opening would gather more than 500,000 curious visitors, but only 50,000 people came at the call of the by now famous mouse. Moreover, Mickey had already spent more than 20 billion francs desiring to make his world one of the finest on the planet.
The recession in Europe tried to cloud even more the future of the European funfair and, in early 1994, Euro Disney seemed to remain just a beautiful memory for some and a dream for others. Loans were rescheduled, payments delayed, and dreams continued to come true.
In the same year, 1994, Euro Disney received a new name - Disneyland Paris - and in the middle of the next year, the profit put smiles on the administratives’ faces, and thus on those of the creditors as well. From that moment on, Mickey Mouse became increasingly proud of its European investment. In 2002, Disneyland Paris got a new neighbour, Walt Disney Studios Park, a neighbour as prolific as the park itself.
