ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I am grateful to the following people for their help and support in the creation of this book.
Mark G. Beals, my mentor at Greenwich University, for realizing, upon receiving the opening chapters of what was intended to be my doctoral dissertation, the potential for a book and encouraging me to get it into the popular press.
Roberta Waddell, who edited my first two books at Instant Improvement and reviewed every word of this manuscript, for her valuable suggestions. And, for recommending me to Norman Goldfind at Avery.
Norman Goldfind, for calling me after reviewing the first few pages and telling me I had a publisher if I wanted to write the book. And, thank you again, Norman, for guiding me through the initial business aspects with the publisher.
Helene Ciaravino, for her positive strokes and for sending me helpful resource material.
Elaine Sparber, for her suggestions to improve the book as she meticulously reviewed the final manuscript line by line.
Dr. William L. Mundy, for giving me the idea for the initial project by presenting a seminar on treating allergies with visual imagery at the Ninth International Conference on the Psychology of Health, Immunity and Disease, given by the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine. Thank you again, Dr. Mundy, for always returning my calls and for sending me helpful material.
Dr. Edward M. Wagner, longtime friend and coauthor of my first two books, for always taking time from his busy schedule to answer questions and make sure that what I wrote was accurate.
Tom Wolfe and the rest of the staff at Smile Herb Shop in College Park, Maryland, for all their help and for sending me useful information.
All the physicians who helped me with this book, for graciously letting me interview them even though many of them wished to remain anonymous. It is my sincere hope that the day will come when they will feel free to lend their names to books on alternative healing.
Dorothy Pressman, my dear friend, for knowing when to encourage me to work and when to drag me away from my computer for some much needed rest and relaxation, and a few laughs. And thanks, Dottie, for your nurturing and letting me get so much work accomplished at your summer home.
Kali and Streaker, for sensing when the muse was sitting on my head and therefore snoozing quietly at my feet, then intuiting when I needed a break and taking me for a walk to clear my head.
And last, but certainly not least, Cookie, my bridegroom of thirty-nine years, for putting up with missed meals and unfolded laundry, and for checking everything I wrote to be sure it was clear and interesting, even to engineers and athletes.
FOREWORD
It has been my privilege to know Sylvia Goldfarb for a number of years. In this book, she focuses upon suggestions for taking charge of our health; on the fact that this may not be readily achieved, but that it can be achieved; that good health is a state of being
that enriches all the dimensions of our lives.
This is a book worth our serious reading. Written in a warm, personable manner-almost as if we, the readers, were sitting across the table from the author, sharing a cup of coffee with her in her kitchen-it reflects some eighteen months of research of literature, interviews with members of the medical profession, and discussions with advocates of alternative remedies for health problems. From these endeavors has emerged scholarly, yet trustworthy and specific, advice. It is a book with vision. Sylvia sees that the grassroots
movement of alternative medicine is beginning to gain momentum. She makes no effort to fault
the medical profession, but, in the most scholarly manner possible, develops her position that alternative considerations must legitimately take their place beside establishment approaches. She insists, with documented justification, that there is a place for these alternatives.
For Sylvia, feeling energetic and healthy is the key to living well. In this excellent book, she has attempted to give us the gift of health. Join me in accepting that gift.

PREFACE
The inspiration for this book came from a seminar I attended on curing allergies with visual imagery that was given by William L. Mundy, MD. At the time, I was looking for a topic for my doctoral dissertation and submitted a proposal to my dissertation advisor for a paper comparing conventional and alternative allergy treatments. My advisor, Mark G. Beals, PhD, recognized the potential of the topic and suggested I write a book instead of a dissertation.
The purpose of the book that resulted – this book – is to enlighten readers about the various alternative methods for treating allergies so that they can make informed decisions as to which method or combination of methods would be best to use in their individual cases.
Those readers who seek more information on how to treat a particular condition – in this case, allergies – outside of mainstream medicine rarely have the time or inclination to first find individual books on each of the various alternative methods and to then look up each book's allergy section. It is yet more time-consuming and expensive to locate and consult a practitioner of each method. And, even if you do get that far, you do not end up with unbiased opinions, since most practitioners think that their method is the most effective, often to the exclusion of all the others. To save you all this work, I have done the research for you and present my findings in a clear, easy-to-understand fashion.
Although the treatment methods for allergies vary widely, most practitioners agree about the root cause of allergies – a malfunctioning or overreaction of the immune system. Before describing the various treatment methods, and to help you understand how they work, I therefore describe the immune system – what it is, how it works, and what can make it overreact. While both conventional and alternative practitioners agree about what causes allergies, they differ widely in their approaches to treating them.
This book was not written to denigrate the medical approaches to allergies, but rather to explain the various alternative approaches and to remind readers that they live in a free society and have the choice of how they wish to be treated.
I have tried to evenhandedly provide you with enough information about the current state of the art, including strengths and weaknesses, to help you select the best treatment, or combination of treatments, for your particular allergies.
Since all the treatments discussed in this book have both negative and positive aspects, I have included an appendix that allows you to quickly review the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment. There is also a section on resource organizations, listing phone numbers and websites, to help you locate more information on any of the therapies that interest you.
Taken together, the information in this book, in your hands, can spell the beginning of the end of your allergy problems.
INTRODUCTION
Do you or a family member suffer from allergies? Are you curious about the multitude of treatment methods available, but feel overwhelmed by all the information that is out there? Although most people are still not aware that methods outside of orthodox medical treatment exist, there is a growing recognition that alternative approaches may have positive outcomes for a high percentage of allergy patients. Alternative treatments, for the most part, are safe and non-toxic. More and more, these alternative methods are finding their way into mainstream medicine, and what was once dismissed as new-age nonsense is now being recognized as cutting-edge, safe therapy.
The various concepts of allergy treatment, both orthodox and alternative, are complex and broad. To get
