    Chapter 1

In the early morning hours back in Kansas Reece was driving still feeling the pain from the events over the last few days but now clearly getting the upper hand on it. In the passenger's seat, Nick was sleeping very comfortably the aggressive driving happening thru the winding country roads of eastern Kansas was not gaining any influence over his tired body. When suddenly they exited the country road up a long dirt farm drive the car went not slowing at all the driver did not care what was happening to the car as he powered the sports car up the gravel drive. Then suddenly the car exits the road and pulls into a barn building, which is just a front to an entrance of an underground tunnel. The car quickly disappears underground moving at a very rapid rate spiraling down until it levels out and stops in a parking space by the rate of descent it was obvious the driver had done it many times before. He exits the car into a large underground parking lot where there were numerous other cars and machinery parked. This facility was impressive, to say the least, it was like an underground parking lot under some large city building the only difference is it’s not in some large city it was in one of the most unexpected places in the country out in the middle of nowhere. Nick was still sleeping as the car came to a parking place and stopped. Reece exits the car while a few other people are coming towards him.

Reece giving directions to the people coming towards him, I’m OK, Take the kid inside and let him get some rest he drove most of the way here. He continues towards a double doorway that goes in a building.

Now awake and looking around at his new surroundings, the interior of the large office building is unfamiliar to the young man it was as he had woken up inside some kind of secret military facility. Nick is taking everything in and wondering what is next. He gets to his feet, goes through the doors leaving his sleeping quarters behind. His curiosity is now getting the better of him as he moves forward. Continuing his walk down the hallway he is trying to figure out where the place is as he comes to an intersection he wonders which way to go suddenly hearing voices to his right he heads in that direction. Walking down the hallway the voices are getting louder, and as he comes to the end of it he is totally amazed at what his eyes are seeing, noticing the people all moving as though it was business as usual. It was an extremely busy office with individuals all working proficiently in their little cubicles. He notices a room to the left where there are a lot of monitors all showing views of the area. Being ignored by the people working around him, he goes into the room to get some kind of idea where he was at.

After a few moments looking at the monitors surveying the exterior parameter he starts to recognize the place. Thinking to himself this is the secret farm that was abandoned because of some kind of weird things going on, the people were arrested not that it mattered anyway because the stories were all made up to entertain all his young friends about the farm they all thought was abandoned until now. The story all the adults told was it was a farm owned by a very wealthy man who comes to visit it by helicopter some times.

Looking back at all the workers in all the cubicles he wonders why he had never noticed a place like this before and how it could be hidden in the small county he grew up in. Suddenly an alarm frightens him to turn back around. One of the monitors was now alarming because it was being approached by a vehicle. He notices the familiar face on the security monitor that was still alarming, it was his father pulling up to an entrance gate to a farm he had just recognized. Suddenly from behind him came a security guard to silence the alarm. Nick was startled and a little cautiously moving to get out of the way, but the man smiled, and Nick knew it was ok for him to be there.

Nick started to talk to the man who had just frightened him. Wow, I always wondered what they did at this place, man did we have the stories they were mostly about this farm being haunted. Suddenly Nick paused and looking at the security guard with an extremely confused look on his face, Wait a minute how is this place hidden?

The security Guard remains silent and continues to watch over Nick his main goal was to help him get oriented with the facility. Avoiding the potential conflict he was so use to when encountering security officers he turns away to avoid the silence of the man. The security guard turns to start resetting the monitor and pushes a button to allow the visitor to enter. Very quickly Nick’s curiosity has immediately led him to start exploring the rest of the facility. He starts to walk out of the room, but he has gotten stalled momentarily again looking at the Parameter monitors hoping to see something else familiar.

Nick starts to speak again when he notices a corner of the property, We have been on this place. Realizing he had just told on himself he quickly starts to leave the room when the security guard responds.

We know, your father took your truck away for a couple of weeks after that happened.

Nick remembering the incident responds, Yes but he said it was for the drinking.

Yes, but he had known you were drinking for a while.

Nick trying to change the subject, How is this place hidden?

It’s all underground, Reece responded coming thru the open door hanging up a cell phone he was talking on. Come with me, someone is here who wants to see you.

They turn to start walking out of the monitoring room and continue down the hall way in a different direction than Nick had discovered passing by another office space Nick notices his mother is at a desk working diligently on something. He stops to see her, but she is ignoring the stare from her oldest son as he is surprised to see her busy working on something. Reece pushes him to continue on because he was a little startled while walking by her office.

Reece and Nick go up a set of stairs that exits in to a tack room in an extremely large barn. This was a site Nick understood saddles, bridles and ropes he also was amazed at how the room changed as they closed the door behind him. This was a very familiar site in thousands of barns all across the Midwest the dust that seems to collect on everything from nowhere he thought to himself this is quite different from the things down stairs the place he just left. As they exit the tack room, they come into a large barn arena area, it is large enough to hold a small rodeo in. Suddenly across the arena a small door opens, and a man enters.

Reece stops and points for Nick to go talk to the man who just entered, Nick knew it was his father Joe. Reece watches as the two men cautiously stop before they get to each other.

They say a few words, then Joe Embraces His son as he thought he was never going to be able to do again the conversation between father and son was going to have to wait because Joe was finding it hard to let go of his boy.

Joe finally letting him breathe for a moment, I bet you have a lot of questions?

    That would be an understatement.

While still keeping his distance, Reece notices as the two talk while kicking the dirt, trying to stay things to each other that they have never said. He notices as Nick put his hands up as he was telling his dad the size of this facility, he notices that the two are smiling, they hug each other again and start walking towards Reece, He takes that as his sign to go towards them, they meet each other in the middle of the arena and Reece start to speak.

Nick did you know that it was your Grandfather that had worked me one summer and changed my life. It was because of your grandfather Joe senior that all this exists.

I wish I had got to know him better.

Come on and one of you guys drive me home. I want to rest up over the long weekend.

Joe notices that Reece is still feeling the pain from the beating that he had gotten in the jail a few days earlier he wanted to pick on him a little, but he knew the time was not appropriate.

Nick breaking the silence and the stare from the two men locked in looking at each other like they both might have missed something. I will do it.

Joe throws him the keys to his pick up that was parked outside. Reece and Nick turn to head across the arena while Joe heads towards the tack room.

Nick takes Reece home to a small farm house on a little quaint dirt road. Being surprised at the simplicity of it, Nick notices when pulling up to the small farm house that there were llamas in the corrals and sheep and goats not the most popular animals for this area. Thinking to himself no man around here I know would want to raise these animals.

Nick telling him, I know your place, me and my friends all laugh and call it the llama farmers place.

I will see you guys on Monday, think I need some more rest.

"I was just picking on you about the animals. What are the llamas for anyway?

I got the sheep and goats to see what in meant in Revelations, why God said he would separate them. The llamas were brought to protect the sheep and goats.

What did you find out? Nick asks curiously.

The Goats are a lot meaner than the sheep.

Wow; that is funny. Do you take everything written in the bible so seriously?

Reece showing the pain while trying to get out of the truck looks towards his driver, I heard it put this way once; the words are like a great treasure the more you dig into them the greater the pay off.

Never thought of it like that; Digging for treasure huh, being rewarded for reading.

You will see soon enough. Tell your father that I will drive the Jeep Monday he doesn’t have to worry about picking me up. See you Kido!

Nick watches as the stranger he met walks towards his house. He is still trying to process how this extraordinarily strange man who has done all these unexplainable things now seems to be more than normal. Backing out of the driveway he slows to watch as his children and his wife all come to grab him as he gets to the top of the porch. What a weird strange man still in a designer suit that probably cost as much as the house. What a crazy thought Nick was thinking as he noticed the woman was waiving to him. Taking that as a sign to remind him to continue leaving, backing into the dirt road, he was on his way home.

    Chapter 2

Monday morning Reece comes walking into a busy local restaurant where it seems as though every farmer around must come for breakfast. Nick and Joe are sitting at a table watching as he enters walking thru the restaurant. Reece is greeting some of the men and saying good morning to the women working there. Coming up to them Nick notices how different he is dressed now with cowboy boots, blue jeans and a brown coat that could show all the stains from a working man’s life. Looking closely at him now he sees a resemblance to a man that he had recognized around town but never known his name. Reece comes up to the table where they were sitting avoiding the strange looks from Nick he takes a seat and smiles at them.

Nick saying, You look just like everyone else around here.

I have lived here for almost two decades, Reece says while smiling.

Joe smiling at his son says, Son this is my closest friend; for obvious reasons he was never able to come around our house.

Nick looking confused, What are the obvious reasons?

Reece still smiling at the young man, One day a stranger would have to turn a light on inside you.

Joe speaking to remedy the estranged look now building on Nicks face as these men had been planning this for a long time probably his whole life, Your grandfather had a thing for strays this was one he picked up.

Reece answering, I had a different opinion about you farm boys after that summer.

    ///

Reece looking at Joe and remembering that summer they met each other. Both were a lot younger, they would push each other that summer harder than they had ever been pushed. They developed a rivalry between each other that has not stopped even to this day. Reece remembered one night they Loaded hay from the fields into the barns way after dark being so tired that they just fell asleep on the hay bales. He remembered Joe senior waking them up on top of the newly built mountain of hay they had finished one morning in the very early hours.

Joe Senior said, Wow you guys got all that unloaded last night, come get some breakfast we got a great and exciting day ahead of us.

Younger Joe asking, What are we going to do today?

I need you guys to bail the lower 400 acres today all by yourselves.

Reece said, we can handle it.

Younger Joe smiling in agreement to the new challenge of the day, Yes we can and we will get it all done today.

Joe senior saying, That is a three day job boys.

Reece smiling with his new friend knowing it would be another challenging day just trying to accomplish the impossible, That is why we will try doing it in one.

Younger Joe and Reece smiling in agreement with each other looking forward to the work ahead of them knowing it was another impossible task they got to do. Then the competition begins, looking at each other they were off running towards the house where they smelled the breakfast cooking.

Joe Senior looking at the two young men who had just turned an extremely hard day’s work into a challenge that they were excited about. Yelling at them. You guys are something else I will need to get more land for you guys to bail and maybe find a hefty bonus for all your hard work. Do you guys like fishing? Joe running to catch up to them he notices that they did not care about the pay as much as pushing each other to find out which one would break like good friends do. They were already headed into the house for breakfast as Joe senior slowed smiling at them listening to the screen door slam.

    ///

Back to the restaurant where Reece had started listening to them again, "How many thousands of bales did we stack till the late hours of the morning that summer?

Don’t know lost count after the first week.

Reece looking towards Nick, Your grandfather always had a way of making you feel rewarded while being totally exhausted at the same time. I always wondered what it would have taken to keep up with his father.

Joe saying, "Or his fathers, father. We were not farmers according to him with all this equipment we have. It is too easy; according to him you had to turn the soil by hand or at the very least a plow behind a horse.

They notice how everyone is talking about the things going on in the world. The news on the small TV screen seemed to grab everyone's attention about how awful things are getting. The conversations seemed to impress Nick. Joe and Reece looked at each other like they seemed to know something, but Joe started shaking his head letting Reece know not say anything about it.

Reece speaking to Nick, Are you ready for your journey?

Nick still focused on the other conversations asks, What are these guys talking about?

Joe answering him, The same thing they have always talked about.

Reece said, Your grandfather and I set here eating many years ago he asked them all a question that really stood out to me. IF THINGS ARE SO BAD WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?" He told me that this is the problem with most people they just want to talk.

    "Dad did not have any
