Principles of Management CLEP Quick Prep Sheet - Justin Orgeron
Welcome to the Quick Prep Sheet for the Principles of Management CLEP!
The Principles of Management CLEP is considered to be one of the easiest CLEPs, but only because so many people are already familiar with much of the subject material. If you are brand new to the workforce (high school student) or have never held any type of supervisory job in corporate America, then I would highly suggest that you take this exam seriously.
No matter your experience level, please pay attention to the theories and theorists listed below. The CLEP will often test your understanding of them as well as your knowledge. For example, it may give you a scenario and then ask which theory best represents that scenario. It may also not even list the theory name, but ask you to apply the theorist with the best solution. It can be tricky, but as long as you know the theories and which school they belong to, you’ll be ready for that portion of the exam.
Hopefully this prep sheet will fill in any gaps in your management knowledge. It’s a lot of information, but we’ve tried to make it all as clear and comprehensive as possible. If you get confused on something, do some further research! Then come back when you fully understand the concepts and keep reading.
Remember, I always suggest you use multiple resources for these exams and that advice hasn’t changed. Once you’re done here, go take our free full-length online practice test (http://practice-exams.free-clep-prep.com/login.php) and make sure you have the material down. Bring this Ebook with you to the testing center and use it for some last minute study in the car. Above all, don’t stress out over the exam! You can do this!
With all that out of the way… on to the studying!
Management Theories and Theorists
This is by far the longest portion of the study guide, and that’s because there’s a lot of ground to cover. The Principles of Management CLEP tends to pick and choose which theories it wants to cover, so I’d recommend making sure you have a firm grasp of all of the following information.
There are many different schools of thought in management, and each has different targets and strengths. We’re going to separate the theorists and theories into their respective school of management to help make it easier to digest. Don’t get overwhelmed. You can do this!
Classical School of Management
Classical School of Management – The Classical School of Management focuses on finding the best way to perform and manage an organization’s processes. It believes that workers should be told exactly how to accomplish their jobs, and that those jobs should be broken down into small tasks with clearly defined steps. Think of a production line, where each worker has a small task in order to create a completely finished product. The Classical School of Management would require each worker to do the same motions, using the same tools in the most efficient way possible, over and over again. If you’re thinking to yourself, Sounds boring!
then you’d be right. While productivity did increase using this method of management, worker happiness definitely suffered.
Classical Scientific Branch (Taylorism) – In the Industrial Revolution, theorists started applying scientific study to the discipline of management. They did this through careful observation and conducting experiments with control groups. Frederick Taylor was the most well-known of these new theorists, and the name Taylorism
quickly stuck to this new form of management.
Frederick Winslow Taylor – Known as the Father of Scientific Management
, Taylor was one of the first people to apply scientific principles to management and he changed how businesses approached both managers and workers. Taylor believed that each task within an organization should be studied, and then procedures should be created that offer the most efficiency by using the correct tools, steps, and actual movements. He proved this by later developed the classical school of management which remained the primary school of management throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
Henry Gantt – In 1910, Henry Gantt created what is now known as the Gantt Chart. This chart allowed managers to list all of the parts of a process and have a visual representation of how long each part of the process was supposed to last. Gantt was a friend of Frederick Taylor, and this chart was yet another tool that managers of the Classical School could use.
Frank and Lillian Gilbreth – This husband and wife team made important contributions to the Classical School of Management with their work on motion study. Motion study is the identification of exactly what actions are needed to complete a task, no more or less, and then training workers to perform those actions. Lillian Gilbreth was one of the first women to make strides into this mostly male dominated area of study.
Classical Administrative Branch – While the first branch of classical management was based upon scientific study of the workers and their actions, another school soon appeared that used the system approach, or looked at the organization as a whole. It still followed the scientific approach to management, but wanted to take a more holistic view of the entire organization. This school of thought included one of
