NORA
FADE IN:
INT. THE NEXUS NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT
Scene looking down within the Nexus, an exclusive but sleazy nightclub. People sit at softly-lit tables watching pole-dancers. Anthem music belt out from an adjoining room where a melee of ravers zone out.
Three rowdy women sitting at a table mock wolf-whistles at the dancers. Nearby voyeurs toss scowls.
NANCY sits at the offending table amongst her drunken friends. Nancy wears a slinky dress, heavy makeup and her hair is highly-styled in tiaras. She is wary and appears out of place with her friends who are caught up in the moment.
BEX, a buxom blonde and CORA, a hatchet-faced sunbed worshipper laugh derisively as Bex brandishes money.
BEX
(to a pole-dancer)
Hey, come here and I’ll slide somethin’ between your butt-cheeks!
Cora cackles.
FIRST PUNTER
(uttering aside)
I wish they’d bloody shut it.
The pole-dancer gives Bex a look. She bends over and gyrates her hips.
BEX
Shit, I’ve just had a flashback about a nasty potholing experience!
Cora and Bex fall about laughing.
Nancy watches them narrowly. She sips her drink.
The dancer turns. Bex’s expression melts. The dancer bends down and clasps Bex’s head in her hands. The dancer proceeds to snog Bex.
Cora and the other punters clap and whistle.
The dancer’s fingers slide toward Bex’s hand and clasps the money. She disengages. The dancer turns and struts off with the money. Bex stares transfixed.
The second punter brandishes a note.
SECOND PUNTER
Hey, stripper! What about one for the other two slappers!
The crowd begin to clap.
Bex looks about with mounting delight.
BEX
Yeah! What about my sisters here!
Nancy glares at Bex.
NANCY
(quietly to Bex)
Stop showing off.
CORA
Come on, Nance. You’ve gotta get some lesbo action before you die!
NANCY
You’re pissed.
CORA
Stuff you.
The cheering and clapping mount. The dancer appraises the sea of notes with arms akimbo. It reaches a crescendo with gibes including ‘come on’, and ‘make it good’.
The dancer plucks the notes. The claps quicken in pace.
Cora puckers her lips. Nancy watches with distaste.
The dancer bends down and snogs Cora. It is tonguey and lingering.
The cheers climax, feet thunder beneath tables.
All eyes are on Nancy.
The dancer approaches Nancy.
BEX (O.S.)
Come on, you frigid cow!
CORA (O.S.)
Get your tongue in there!
Nancy averts her face as the claps continue. Her sights catch something.
THE SAME – NANCY’S POV - CONTINUOUS
At the bar, three bouncers are watching intently. Their coordinator, LEON is black, burley and crisply-dressed in bling jewellery.
THE SAME - CONTINUOUS
Nancy’s gaze lingers as the claps reach fever pitch.
Nancy faces the dancer. The dancer closes in.
Nancy backs into her seat.
The dancer reads Nancy’s expression. She air-kisses Nancy and moves away. The clapping breaks into whistles and groans.
CORA
(to Nancy)
You boring tit.
Nancy sips her drink. Bex stares at her.
BEX
Yeah, go easy on the mineral water.
The first punter turns in disgruntlement.
FIRST PUNTER
(to Bex)
Put a sock in it, with yer!
Bex glares at him.
BEX
Who asked you?
FIRST PUNTER
Look, you’ve had your fun, now why don’t you move along?
BEX
We’re just trying to liven things up, you grizzled old troll!
Cora cackles.
CORA
Don’t get your G-string in a twist, Bexie or he’ll start drooling over it!
The first punter slams his drink down and gets up.
Nancy glances towards the bouncers.
THE SAME – NANCY’S POV - CONTINUOUS
Leon is now standing at the bar alone. He is still watching.
BEX (O.S.)
(to the first punter)
Loser!
THE SAME - CONTINUOUS
Close-up, we see Nancy close her eyes in resignation.
Raucous laughter and shouting ensue at the table. We sense movement around Nancy as people get up and leave.
Nancy opens her eyes.
THE SAME - CONTINUOUS
The neighbouring table has emptied. Bex and Cora continue to dominate the area with their laughter and gibes.
CORA
Oh, shit, don’t look now.
Nancy follows Cora’s gaze expecting the worst.
THE SAME – NANCY’S POV - CONTINUOUS
Within an elite group across the room, we see the owner of the Nexus chain, VINCENT JONAS. He has long, Italian features and black sleek hair, sculpted with hair cream.
