Introduction
For years, I have been fascinated with the golf swing. I have read many books and magazines. I have taken lessons from some of the greatest instructors in the world. I have studied the swings of the best players, all in an attempt to gain knowledge about the swing.
Through all of this, I noticed there was one thing all great players had in common in their swings. No matter what grip, stance, tempo, posture, or length of swing they had, they all did this exact same thing in their swing, which put them all in the correct positions so they could swing aggressively at the ball. From these positions, they could play a draw, a fade, or hit it straight.
I came to the conclusion that the only way to hit good shots on a consistent basis was to do the same thing that practically every professional I looked at did. Just as importantly, I knew it would be difficult to play well while swinging any other way.
In 1 Step to Better Golf, you will learn this one key swing characteristic of the top pros, and how to implement it into your swing. This is the one move you need to make in your golf swing before anything else gets attention. I try to not focus on aspects of the swing that are individual. I just want you to be aware of the most common trait among good players’ swings.
To teach this proper swing technique, I will highlight the common swing problems of the majority of golfers. Then, to correct these problems, I will share some amazing drills which will help you ingrain the correct habit. These drills will teach you the proper swing technique in the most simple way possible. I’ll also show you how to video your swing so that you can make sure you are swinging with the correct motion.
The whole swing comes down to this: as long as you have the one aspect in your swing that is common in nearly every professional, you can almost guarantee you’ll play good golf. And as you’ll see, it’s very easy to establish this move.
PART ONE - THE PROBLEM
Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. If you don't have any problems, you don't get any seeds.
-Norman Vincent Peale
Chapter 1
Before you can learn about the one step you need to make to play better golf, you must first be aware of the most common swing problem. You need to understand the situation you are most likely facing, in order to hel p you better comprehend what needs to be done to improve. Understanding why the following swing positions are so problematic will help you understand why the positions that are recommended shortly will help you.
Being fully aware of the current state of your golf game is no different from any other situation you may face. In order to know how to get somewhere, you have to know where you're starting from.
Over the Top
The number one cause of poor golf is swinging over the top. In fact, 85 percent of all golfers make this move in their swing. When they start their downswing, their arms move out away from the body and they swing above, or over the top
of the ideal plane.
Over-the-Top Swing Sequence:
1. Setup - When golfers address the ball, they automatically establish their ideal swing plane. This will change slightly, depending on what club they are using.
ill12. Backswing - Over-the-top golfers will usually take the club back to the inside of this ideal plane. Even if they take it back on plane, trouble still awaits.
ill23. Downswing - The move you make after you reach the top of your swing is the most crucial one in all of golf. It is what golfers do at this point that causes them to be either low or high handicappers. Over-the-top players will start this move by swinging their arms away from the body, and out above the ideal swing plane they established at address. Low handicappers and pros will drop their arms to the correct inside position.
ill3High handicapper move
ill4Low handicapper move
4. Impact - In order to get back to the ball to actually hit it, over-the-top golfers have to cut across the plane, thereby cutting across the ball. This produces a slice, if the clubface is square or open, or a pull, if the clubface is closed.
ill55. Finish - The shoulders and lower body spin to the left and end up in a weak position.
There are many different reasons why you can place yourself into this over-the-top position. You have heard many of the phrases before, and I could give you a long list of things. Here are some of the more common:
- Sliding your head forward to start the downswing
- Opening your shoulders before impact
- Casting with your right arm and wrist
- Spinning out with your hips
All these things could very well result in putting you out over the proper swing plane, but what you need to understand is that no matter what the cause, the symptoms are always the same. By having your arms and golf club over the plane, you are forcing yourself to have to cut across the ball, which produces either a slice or a pull, depending on the clubface position. It's that simple.
Because every instance results in one ultimate cutting-across action, I believe that one ultimate underneath move of the club would fix everything. So the idea is to swing your club in the opposite direction of over the top. Instead of swinging inside on the way back, and outside on the way down, you need to swing steep on the way back, and shallow on the way down.
Now certainly that may be easier said than done. With the majority of golfers in the world swinging over the top, getting your club to swing in the opposite direction might seem like a complex task. Actually, it's not. Not if you follow the instruction in Part Two. It will make it easy for you to establish this move. As a result, you will have the proper swing structure and be able to strike good shots more consistently.
Chapter 2
Other Swing Aspects
Because your swing shape is the most determining factor in your success or failure in golf, I choose not to address other aspects of the swing that you are probably used to hearing about, such as stance, tempo, or length of swing. I do not feel that these areas of the swing warrant the attention they are given. I believe that as long as you do what is necessary in the swing, you can approach other areas in a number of different ways.
In order to become a good golfer, you do not need a perfectly parallel and shoulder-width stance. You do not need a slow and easy tempo. You do not need a parallel clubshaft at the top of your swing.
Let me illustrate a couple of areas of the swing that are not essential for you to focus on. You shouldn't focus on these parts of the swing for the following reasons:
1. They are different for many top players
2. They don't have a great impact on the outcome of your shots
3. They take away from your focus on what's most important in the swing
Swing Length
There are many different swing lengths in golf. From amateurs to professionals, swing lengths vary considerably. Very rarely do you see a player get precisely to a parallel position at the top. This is fine. The key is to have your swing length remain consistent, regardless of what length it is.
Most amateurs want to make their swing longer, because they feel this will help them hit the ball farther. This is a common misconception in golf. There are a number of factors that go into generating clubhead speed needed to hit the ball far. The length of your swing is only one of them. Some of the fastest swings are short, crisp motions, which use a lot of wrist and hand action. And some of the slowest swings are long, lazy motions, where there is a tendency to decelerate the club through impact.
Instead of concerning themselves with the length of their swing, players searching for distance should focus on making solid contact with the ball. Many of the problems that lead to mis-hit shots, such as swinging over the top, also result in lack of distance. So by correcting the swing issues, and thereby making solid contact with the ball, increased distance will happen naturally.
Stance
I was out at the Buick Open a few years ago watching Nick Faldo hit balls on the range. He was doing a stance drill, with his right foot set well behind his left. This was clearly not a stance Nick would use in normal situations, but you
